Chiang Mai

So we arrived in Chiang Mai after a long day and with a very ill Eirini in tow. You could tell Eirini was in quite bad shape as she had stopped talking (complaining) and was in a bit of a zombified state to be honest. On arriving in CM the hotel had also not sent a pickup (apparently the web booking form had not passed on the flight number/time, and they did not have the foresight to email me re this) but it was all fairly well organised with a set fare so it ultimately did not take us long t...

Trekking begins!
Today was our trekking day. We had met all the guys the night before in the bar downstairs and they all appeared to be really friendly and a great laugh so we had high hopes. We had packed the bear minimum as carrying too much stuff in the jungle would not have been a great idea! When we left we first stopped off at the tourist police who checked that everyone was accounted for before we started our trek as apparently there are always a few people who go ...

Chiang Mai, Thailand

... the afternoon we went up to the Doi Suthep Temple, high above the city to see the sunset, and at 6pm the monks started to pray and chant. Zoe went into the temple to get blessed by the monk for safe travel. after this we headed back down the mountain to the night market, where we had dinner together. Gigs then went off with the ...

... t genetically designed or modified to be cute and fluffy, they are designed to hunt and kill prey. Once again their size is the most remarkable and revealing feature – it doesn’t matter how many tigers you see on TV or in the zoo, their size in real life is quite frankly daunting. After a snap or 50 we move on to our next host, a colossal animal sprawled out on the grass catching an afternoon nap. His nap could continue as far as I was concerned but after Dudley and Asim ...

Chiang Mai: Not Just a Chinese Food Restaurant. Ha

... that at this time of night, the only thing we could do for them was to buy them some food, so we found a market and bought them apples, bananas, and a yogurt drink which they loved! They were cute, happy and grateful. Probably the cutest thing we saw was that they actually offered their bananas to two small children who were looking on, but who were not street kids.

The four street kids worked to bring recyclables back to industries here ...

... a small shrine (most houses have a small shrine in the corner of the yard or compound). We felt really lucky to be invited to share this daily ritual with our new friend.

Every year in August, Luang Prabang holds a huge Dragon Boat race. People from all over Laos, Thailand and Vietnam come to town to enjoy all of the festivities. The big race was held the day that we left so the town was getting very busy leading up to it. It seemed like every little ...

Last day at the Elephant Nature Park

... her whole head under to fill her trunk and then was able to tuck her tiny trunk into her mouth and drink. Soon it was time to leave so we swallowed a few tears and jumped on the van to Chiang Mai. When we arrived, we found a great hotel for $16 a night Called the Na Inn. Really clean and modern...I highly recommend it! We showered and ran to meet the other volunteers for dinner. We had a nice meal and a drink and were off to bed completely wiped out!!

Zoo

... a few hours at the zoo we were both exhausted and caught a bus back towards our hotel. Later on we went to the night market for dinner. We try to eat at markets whenever we can to keep costs down. We can usually get dinner including drinks for $2 or less. The night market in Chiang Mai is one of the best we have been to in terms of food because they have just about everything and it is really cheap.

Sleep was difficult but i managed to doze off towards the end of the journey only to be woken after what felt like 30 seconds by this angry little Thai man asking us all to get off the bus with all our stuff!
