I am not alone. All my life, people I know or even those who hardly know me, remark about my ready smile. We just landed in a country that has been dubbed "The Land of Smiles" and we feel very welcomed and relaxed. Tony and I are getting accustomed to "wai-ing", the slight bow with palms pressed together in a prayer like fashion as I utter "sawatdi kha", being female and Tony says "sawatdi khrap" as a male.

In some ways Chiang Rai is what some say Chiang Mai used to be. Some say (like the aussie dude I met) No way it's Pai man! (he didn't actually say 'Man' but he should have) I say rubbish!
Its all good. I got the feeling from Chiang Rai that the falang tourist industry is not their mainstay
by any stretch of the imagination and is very Thai and very vibrant.
