Sofia to Rila Monastery

... with some rooms always available for travellers. The Church is stunning with 1200 magnificent murals, inside and out, and also holds Tsar Boris III's tomb; it's believed he was poisoned by the Nazis. We spent the afternoon around the Monastery, and then walked to the nearby village restaurant/pub for dinner. Looking forward to a lovely peaceful evening.

Borovetsis suusatamas

... gorgoeus. In another shop as a reward for saying thankyou to the shopkeeper in Bulgarian she gave us half an apple each! The trip back to Sofia was colder than the trip out as the sun had set so we were all bundled up with our beanies, glove and ski jackets in full use - even the locals were rugged up so I didn't feel too touristy! When we got in a cab in Sofia it was -3'C outside so no wonder the bus was so cold as the ...

Rila Monastery

... Monastery is regarded as one of Bulgaria's most important cultural, historical and architectural monuments. It is on account of this also a key tourist attraction in Bulgaria and Southeastern Europe as a whole. Spent a good part of the day to get here, and it was well worth the effort. Nestled in between the mountains, you turn a corner and suddenly there it is, this massive monastery ...

Rila Monastery

... Two more hours on the bus and we were in Bansko. Got ready and then we went out for a big group dinner. The restaurant was a traditional place and had a gypsy band playing some music. Had some cured ham type of meat and then and amazing (!!!) rice, sauerkraut and shredded pork dish. Blew the one earlier out of the water! On the way back a couple of us grabbed some 2L bottles of beer (for $1.50!) and sat on the balcony for a couple of hours having some drinks.

HUBS 1 and 2

... mainly when ordering food. For next HUB I will definitely bring my stuff and self-study. Also, while I had a lot of fun with the other volunteers, especially going out drinking on Monday night, after 1 week in kocherinovo I'm not at the point where I'm craving American company and speaking English. So whatever, it was only 2 days and I'll get over it. Just glad to be back in Kocherinovo.

Thursday March 09 - Day 6

... which he was later fined for. Terry and I decided to sneak a quick 5 minutes on Brenden ski's which was just a bad idea as we were starting from a black run! Terry proved far more successful at this than I did.... A hint for those of you trying... don't point you ski's parallel down the slope and lean back!!! From the bumboarding we headed to the Bulgarian evening were we were served local food and drink and shown the video that Stefan had made of the ...

... beer as well. Black Tiger was also visited, as was Franko's (I think). Me, C and Pete headed home about 2:30 after another kebab, while B and K sampled the local delights of the Pigalle Gentlemen's Club and returned about 4 raving about the quality of the women there. Not bad at all for 10 Lv per dance, about £3.50. Bargain. Thursday After the relative quietness of last night we all emerged feeling relatively sharp and looking forward to a good day on the slopes. Once again the ...

Part 1 - The first half

... and having an open fire, Intro was also visited where i think we were the only people in there. Next up was 101 Cocktail where first of all we tried an Egyptian smoking pipe which was vvvvvery relaxing and then K and C took to the floor for a beautiful karaoke rendition of Suspicious Minds. The night finished in Buzz Bar again where yet more 2-4-1 beer was consumed and there were so many guys it felt like the proverbial cock fight. Another drunken walk home followed ...
