May 14th We had a lot to do today as this evening we are off to Chiang Mai. Had to get to Khoasan Road and leave our parcels with South East Asia (they are a good shipping company). They were very good to us and allowed us to keep parcels with them without paying per day as most places do. After that we took the No. 2 bus to the Pratanum Market again as we needed to buy more things, lovely in the local bus only costing 7.5 baht each, what a good deal!!! While we there the heavens opened and t...
Chiang Mai, Thailand pturnerThursday 15th May This morning I woke up with a stiff neck as the pillow was a bit hard and too high for me. Managed to find the cleaner and got a new pillow. After breakfast we took a tuk-tuk to the hire place and then hired a motorbike at a very good price for a 100 baht per day for as many days as we want. Off we went on our motorbike to Chinatown district to go and look at various things. We found our shop that we were looking for and proceeded to do good business with him. We bought so m...
Chiang Mai, Thailand pturnerFriday 16th May Last night I had a wonderful sleep with my new soft pillow. After a wonderful breakfast (I would recommend this hotel to anyone) of omlette, sausage, fruit and fruit juice and coffee, we went to the Post Office to buy an enormous box to post all these bags that we had bought yesterday. We got back onto our motorbike and went to the market again today (the local market) where we bought a kettle, coffee and some milk. We went to another market where everything was marked at 10 b...
Chiang Mai, Thailand pturnerSaturday 17th May This morning we were a bit later than usual and the dinning-room was much fuller than the other days, but that did not stop us from having a real good breakfast. After breakfast we decided to take the motorbike out onto highway R108 towards Tesco Lotus and the BigC stores. We managed to buy our tesco normal teabags and sugar here as at 7 Eleven no normal tea. From there we carried on along the highway out of the city and turned off at the sign that lead us to the Botanical G...
Chiang Mai, Thailand pturnerSunday 18th May This morning after breakfast we decided to go and do some local site-seeing and ended up at the Arts & Cultural Centre which is run by the local municipality. We found it extremely interesting with visual audio effects which take you back into the history of the place. After that we ended up at the old Temple in the middle of the city and spent some time chatting to a local Thai man which was also very enlightening. On our way home we stopped and bought some sushi which we...
Chiang Mai, Thailand pturnerTuesday 20th May This is our last day in Chiang Mai and much to do. We had to get to the Post Office to send off our box of handbags to SA, you should have seen us balancing the enormous box on the motorbike with us walking next to it. After that we took a drive around and stopped at the Three Kings Monument (took some pics) and then also stopped at the Women's Correctional Services where we saw all the things that the female inmates make during their imprisement - some beautiful embroidery i...

... The squat toilet was an experience, you weren't allowed to use it while stopped in the station for obvious reasons as it was just a hole in the floor. Finally got to Chiang Mai, I managed to get off the train on the wrong side as I followed the train staff out of the door, so I was standing on the actual track. Had the guards shouting in Thai trying to explain to me to get back on the train and get out the other side.
Chiang Mai, Thailand craftyphil... back of a motorbike. There was the beginning jerky stops and starts and screaming and giggling but it just got worse from there. Jessie is not used to riding anyone and im horrible at reading a map. Jessie decided that screaming at the cars "IM MERGING, IM MERGING" worked well. Im sure I didn't help by laughing my head off on the back. Im sure we looked demented in our borrowed helmets screaming and laughing thru traffic. To say the least we headed straight back to the ...
Chiang Mai, Thailand savageharmonyI am typing this as I take the 12 hour train ride north to Chaing Mai. The heat today has left me pretty wiped so I am not sure how much energy I have to put into anything coherent. But here goes.... On the surface, Bangkok is a big, loud, dirty, hot, frantic, cheap city. But dig a bit deeper (in some parts, REALLY deep), you'll find a small town with a happy vibrant soul. Sure there are rats under foot, traffic crossings that lessen your ...
Chiang Mai, Thailand donmiller... then were on the trail again. This day was MUCH easier than the first... the uphills were minimal and the distance was MUCH shorter. If anything, we were going downhill most of the time. We only walked for about 45 minutes until we came to our first of 2 waterfalls of the day. Even though the day was HOT, the waterfall was absolutely freezing but still beautiful. At the waterfall we had an instant noodle lunch then set off again for the 2nd waterfall ...
