We awoke to an overcast sky. After finding the local post office in the lovely little town of Exeter, we asked for a breakfast recommendation and were told to go to the Huron Cafe, just two blocks down the road. We arrived about 10 am to find a gathering of The ROMEO Club (Retired Old Men Eating Out) which got me to wondering - why can't my group meet at a reasonable time like 10 am? Then I remembered that we are all basically crazy, so why not at 6:00?

A travel blog entry by astashio on Dec 04, 2012's actually happening. I'm leaving. I have not been to a different continent since I started working a 'real' job which doesn't make sense. I've been fighting off the travel bug by watching, reading Bourdain. But I want to see these things myself. In a few hours, I board flight #1 of 15. I've been really busy. Reading, working, loosely planning etc. But have yet to feel excited.

So I've packed, not for anything ...

I guess we can stop for food.

I of course got myself some running ...

Carol, Karin and Liz begin their adventure. Three countries, eight cities in eight days in a Toyota FJ. Carol arrived before the break of day to pick up Karin and I and we set off into the fog and cold. We breezed through customs and were amazed by the thickness of the fog. Passed a rather bad accident that was clearly caused by the poor visibility and icy bridge over to Grand island. Once the sun came up and fog burnt off it was a crisp clear day for ...

... either filled in to or let out of the shoot to either elevate or lower the ship. This way the ship can either climb up the locks or go down them to go up or down river. We did see one huge ship in one of the locks. It takes about 30 minutes for the ships to get through each lock so we didn't see the ship head through the lock, but it was crazy to see how little room there is in the locks around the ships. It is a tight space and I couldn't imagine trying to get a ...
