    Yellow water, smokey room

Our stay was a bit of a disappointment. The room stank of smoke, particuarlily annoying as we had asked for a non smoking room specifically. When we asked at reception, they said they had no non smoking rooms left.
The room itself was ok, but the water coming out of the bathroom taps was yellow. I dont mean it had a yellowy tinge, it was completely yellow.
The area the hotel is in is good, but I would choose one of the others nearby.

    Last Day in Moscow

Today was our last day in Moscow but it was almost a full one as the sleeper train to St Petersburg didn't leave until 10.30.

We kicked off with a visit to Lenin's Mausoleum to see his embalmed 143 year old body. It looked in good shape but I could have been none the wiser if I'd been told it was a wax dummy. The visit was brief, we …

Today was our only full day in Moscow and it definitely was a full one. We started with a three and a half hour tour of the Kremlin by an energetic guide called Arkady, whose name reminded me of Arkady Grigorovich Ourumov from Goldeneye. He rattled through dates, dynasties and tsars at breathtaking speed in between ordering us to go there and look …

Our train actually arrived early this morning, which was some achievement given the distance travelled. We were met at the station by a driver who seemed to have combined the surliness of the previous two and then squared it. He did at least help us load the bags into the back of the mini-bus. There was also good news in the form of a hotel upgrade …

    The Spirit of Moscow

... back to the hostel we follow a different route next to the river. At first it is OK to stroll on the grass below the Kremlin walls but later we a stuck next to a roaring 8 lane road that runs alongside the river which is slow moving, brown and banked with stark granite canal walls. By the time we flop down our beds we are exhausted, hot and not very enthralled by our first experience of Moscow.

We intend to find a local restaurant for dinner but are amazed at ...

... but it’s a busy affair and much line waiting can be looked forward to.

After all the rigmarole I strolled into the heart of Russian government and made my way straight to one of its greatest exhibits, the Armoury. I’m a huge fan of medieval history and an even bigger fan of medieval fantasy, so when I walked into the Kremlin’s Armoury I was in for quite the treat with countless suits of armor, daggers, long swords, broad swords, ...
