Historical Traveler Reviews BEST WESTERN Orlando Gateway Hotel
I made reservations at this hotel months ago, a friend recommended that i check out their reviews on tripadvisor. I have to say i was very concerned after reading past reviews, i called the hotel and was assured that those were isolated cases. I have to agree with the hotel. During our entire stay, the staff were amazingly friendly, our rooms was pleasantly decorated, the breakfast was worth the $6.95. The pool was nice and clean, jacuzzi's excellent ant the lady at the pool bar was very friendly and gave great advise on area attractions. I would recommend this hotel to all my friends.
For a Clarion, I was EXTREMELY disappointed! It had to be the worst place I'd ever stayed. I'm not a very picky person when it comes to hotels..but this one set me off. When we got there we went up to the desk to check in and they had told us they lost our 2nd room reservation and we would have to pay an addional 90$ a person! After hours of fighting and arguing with the management we finally got our 2nd room. The room was absolutely disgusting. The plumbing didn't work, there were bugs in the bathroom, the shower knob fell off in my hand, previous guests' clothes had been left in drawers, the rug was disgusting, and the alarm clock didn't work at all. We were willing to deal with it but then the hot water pipe burst forcing us to repack everything we had and move up to another floor. The new rooms weren't better at all but we were too tired to complain anymore. We went down to the pool, which is very nice. The towles out there are the size of my arm's length. The "snack shop" outside closes at noon, or whenever the bar tender feels like it. there were bugs everywhere in the hotel and all the floors were wet. This is a very very poor managed hotel and I would HIGHLY recommend thinking twice before you book here.
We pride ourselves on the cleanliness and friendly service at our Clarion. I am sure that you will find these unsatisfied guests to be the exception rather than the rule. Here is a link to our web site: (---) I hope that after viewing our hotel and reading our 100% satisfaction guarantee, you have a sense of reassurance. We look forward to your stay and will do everything we can to make it enjoyable!
Needs a Major Overhaul
We had a reservation for Mother's Day weekend at this property. The only positve thing that I have to say is that some of the staf are very friendly and try to be very accommodating. Now having said that, the hotel is conveniently located however it is surrounded by empty lots and closed down large buildings, making the area look kind of down and unsafe. From the outside it has an old/badly painted hotel. The lobby is OK but could use new furniture and a new makeover. The rooms are a travesty, the spreads look worn and it look like the matresses sag byt the way the bed was made. The bathrooms looked pretty filthy. The grout between the tiles is so dark green that you would not go in without shoes, much less to take a shower. We looked at two rooms that they showed us and decided to cancel the reservation and go somewhere elsethe same day. We did not spend more than 2 hours inside. The hotel is not worth it, specially for the price. There are several other properties within the same area, which are also affordable and are more appealing than this hotel. Would not consider the hotel at all. Too bad that it carries the Clarion name brand.
Best hotel I have stayed at yet in Orlando. Price was a bit high for my budget but didn't know about the discount hotel websites at that time. Nice breakfast area, nice staff..
They Need to get New Mattresses
On arrival - yes - the Hotel's lobby is clean, well decorated with helpful staff. The Hotel is very close to Universal, across from Wet n Wild and convenient to various Shopping areas. We had booked 2 adjoining rooms - no problems there.
The hotel has a nice cafe/store that was a little pricy - buy your chips. soda and beer before you get there.
The pool is clean and simple - bar that closed at 4pm beside it. The pool towels are smaller then the ones in the room, and feel like sand paper - grab extras from housekeeping before heading down.
The rooms are a good size, with good closet space. The bedding and towels were always very clean. The pillows are very soft. The mattresses however were NOT. They were horrible.
The bathrooms too need some attention. The exhaust cover was broken & hanging down. The toilet in one bathroom was constantly running & we had it fixed everyday. The black mold needed to be cleaned off with a good scrub brush and bleach and water damage along the bath tub was unsightly.
The staff was polite and helped make our stay enjoyable - but I will not be returning to this hotel the next time in Florida.
Dirty/stained furniture but Mngr gave discount
We booked this over the internet at the Clarion website, and as many of you know, it can be a roll of the dice as to what the hotel is actually like when you arrive. We had stayed at this hotel 4 or so years ago when it was a different name(Tropicana?), and unknown to us, was under renovation at that time. In driving up to the hotel we remembered this and had hoped things would be better than we remembered. The main lobby was attractive and clean. The Front Desk staff was Very pleasant and professional. Our reservations were found promptly. We had booked a Suite. Upon entering the room we found large stains on the sofa cushions and the arms were almost greasy with filth. We asked for a different suite and they happpily agreed. This second room was no better.
The room was spacious, but again, it was as though nothing had been really cleaned for years. Tired from the drive to Orlando, we spoke to the manager who was very receptive and courteous and stated he was glad to know this and appreciated our comments. Upon check-out it seems he had adjusted the bill as a jesture of good-will. In short, the size of the Suites are large but need much revamping and cleaning (or at least new furniture). There are other hotels so I would look elsewhere first.
Good price, good value!
Before I chose this hotel on expedia, I've read reviews on tripadvisor... This hotel had many many positive comments.
The hotel overall was pretty clean and nice.. but this hotel does not provide any shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush, toothpaste.. We had to go out and get them..
And, for this hotel being 3 star hotel, we expected slippers/bathrobes, if not, at least more towels...... the bathtub was very small as well..
just like the standard ones..
The location was pretty cool, "Wet & Wild" was right across from the hotel... and also, we had a car but took the free shuttle bus, which stops right in front of the hotel, to Universal Studios...It was only a 20min drive... also, it was about a 20min drive to Disney World.... and also about a 20min drive from the airport... We went to Cocoa Beach as well, which was very very pretty and relaxing... it was about 40min drive from the hotel...
The hotel also has a swimming pool, which closes too early.."11pm"...
but it was pretty nice... It would be much better if there were umbrellas for shades....
This hotel was good for its location and prompt cleaning of the room..
I'd recommend this hotel if you want to go with inexpensive hotel..
Just so so...
My first impression as i walked into this hotel was good, the front desk staff were great, and very helpful.
I went up to my room, and noticed the tiles in the bathroom were loose and were moving around somewhat.
This hotel wasn't bad, but there were some problems:
There were no towels at the pool. I personally went and asked for more, and watched as the bell captain called for more towels, i returned to the pool.
Approx. 1.5 hours later, there were still no towels, I overheard two more angry customers who had just returned from the front desk, they were told that towels were well on their way. We left the pool an hour after that... soaking wet, because the towels had yet to be delivered.
so, almost 3 hours after my first complaint, no one had bothered to deliver towels.
Next, I move to "sharky and jacks", the in house restaurant. DO NOT EAT HERE. especially for breakfast. The breakfast buffet is a serious rip off, as well, we found the hostess to be EXTREMELY rude. she was also the table clearer, and left the dishes to be piled up on the table for most of our meal and had to be asked to clear our table off. go down the street and eat somewhere else for breakfast, it will be cheaper and more satisfying.
the hot-tubs alternate in heat, most times you can't go wrong with the hot tub to the right, we found most often that the left hot tub was usually the same temp. as the pool...
Like is said, this hotel isn't bad, but in terms of customer service, and some of the amenities, you can do alot better for the price...
Mom and pop hotel would have been better!
Firstly staff was courteous and helpful...... The room need to be refurnished and cleaned ! The carpet filthy stained my daughters feet - Ants were all over sink and bathroom floor - alarm clock and other items enough dust where you could write your name...For a "Clarion Hotel " I was deeply disappointed and would not go back. The pool area was nice weather was a balmy 46 at night but pool was so warm and clean we enjoyed our swim... The breakfast @ $6.95 was a joke- save your money go elsewhere- the breakfast buffet was equal to a contintel breakfast!.Location is fantastic but unless they do some serious refurbishing and cleaning stay elsewhere!
WOULD NOT RECOMMEND/HAVE HAD BETTER
Checked in June 6 as part of a pkg deal. Was told to come back at 7:00 for our Disney passes. Carpet was soaking wet by door. Bathroom fan vibrated and made alot of noise. Was part of light and could not be shut off unless you wanted to be in a dark bathroom. Tried buffet for breakfast, cold tater tots, overdone bacon, not much other selections. Very poor buffet for expensive price. Found Bonanza down the street $3.99 buffet for breakfast and ate there after that. It was wonderful for the price! At 7:00 a.m. was told to get Disney tickets at the park. All the way to Disney, pay the $7.00 parking, get on the tram, stand in a long line, was told no, get tickets at the hotel. Back we went after having to walk to our car because the tram was not going the other way. Went to front desk and demanded the manager. Finally tickets found under main front desk. Lack of concern on hotel staff. Was at pool with a friend who is a nurse. Someone was dragging a child from the pool. Over my friend ran to assist. I ran in and told hotel to call 911. They never came. Friend got water out of child's lungs and he coughed-was ok, Thank God. I could not believe 911 did not come when I told hotel staff. They said a report would be written. hmmmmm Hallways did have an odor to them. One of two elevators was broken. When it was repaired? it jerked and made noise so much the other guests and I joked when it appeared that we would not ride it. Maid service was good. Guy at bellhop station appeared angry we carried our own two bags in. I told him we could handle it because it was all we had. Jacuzzi (s) (2) were not hot in the evening we tried them. Pool was clean and nice. Have been to Orlando 3 times in the past and this hotel was the worse we stayed at.

We got a very late start this morning because we didn't return from the Magic Kingdom yesterday until 1am. The crowds were very light today at Hollywood Studios. This park is the one that everyone remembered the least so everything seemed new. We had lunch at the Sci Fi Drive in Diner. That was cool. The only thing we didn't get to do that we wanted to was Toy Story Mania. Even though ...
... a place where you might find a hobo passed out. A bunch of trees and shrubs, an old sneaker or two, a dirty blanket. Real nice. I tried to put up my tent in the dark, but I couldn't figure out how to do it. I thought I might just try laying in it anyway and zipping it up so no bugs would get in, but as I lay there I thought of what the headlines might look like if I happened to get killed in that little spot.
