... a huge crane lifted us about 160 feet over the city. Mikkie is afraid of heights so I sat next to her to calm her down. She did really well actually. Poor Lily and Caroline were not tall enough to go up, which Semester at Sea should have told their parents about before they bought tickets for this field program. I think they got a refund so that’s good. But David was a good husband and let Mikkie go up to face her fear of heights and enjoy the meal while he stayed back with ...

    ... dinner.

My family's second Finnish exchange student Pilvi, who lived with us in 94/95, lives very close to the Uskali's, so we met her and her husband Iikka for dinner. Pilvi made a reservation at a restaurant, Pinella, right on the river in downtown Turku. Pekka and Anneli joined us and we had a great time. After that, I continued escaping from the rain by going into the finish national museum, which was ...

... and current UNESCO World Heritage Site. Suomenlinna is actually four islands connected by bridges. The massive stone fortress is situated amongst beautiful green grassy areas and a rugged rocky shoreline. However, before exploring it, we had to get to Vesikko, the only WWII submarine remaining in Finland. After paying a nominal entrance fee, we boarded the dry-docked submarine for a first-hand account of how tightly packed it must have been while living and ...

... with it. I felt bad for the guy.

Unfortunately, while the weather cooperated with us during our morning jaunt, it did not like our tour so much. Cloudy. Cold. Intermittently raining. Didn't make for the best time. And my pictures got steadily more depressing. Hopefully it warms up a bit into the evening when we get some Finnish cuisine, but this seems like good weather to go to the sauna. Fun fact, there are more saunas in Finland than there are cars. Because cold.
