... is like an onion, with the oldest parts in the center, and the center is where our hotel is. This city used to be a retirement community for Roman soldiers, and the oldest part is laid out with north-south and east-west streets close to the river. Florence is basically brown, as the stone from which it is built and paved is brown. Unlike Venice, it is full of cars, buses, bicycles and motorcycles, so that crossing the street is again challenging. ...
