the bus to alanya

Day 53

Not much to say today. I was pretty lazy for some reason and did not leave the hotel until 11am. Someone else had borrowed the hotel bicycle so I had to get the local bus out to Anemurium ('place of the winds') to see the ancient ruins built by the Byzantines. The city was founded in the 1st century AD but hit hard by an earthquake around 580.

Since it was 110 km / 3 hour ...

From Silifke to Alanya

Two nights in Silifke We stayed in the Lades Motel in Silifke which is the best place to stay for birdwatchers who want to sample the 320 species in the Goksu Delta, www.ladesmotel.com is the website. The guy who runs it, Nurullah Cinar (the "C" should be with one of those appendices hanging underneath), already for more than 30 years, is a pleasant chap, he knows his birds. Many organisations use his motel as a starting point or as a stop on birding trips. He ...

Fethiye

... no tours planned, just three days to relax. This gives us a chance to go through our photos and catch up on this blog. We also walk around the city and check it out. There are very few tourists in town and we are practically the only guests in the hotel. At an outdoor café, which atypically in a Muslim country had English bacon on the menu, we met a man and woman who are retired ex-pats: a man from England and a woman from Ireland. They have fallen in love with the place, but not ...

Back to the Coast

After all the rock formations we had seen it was time to head back to the coast for some sea and sand. So it was off to a place on the water called Kizkalesi. Firstly we headed along the beach and found an absolute bargain place right on the beach with a perfect view of Maiden's Castle out in the middle of the water. We spent 2 nights here sunbaking, drinking, eating and ...

Heaven is a Tree House.

... were outstanding. We listened for hours. There have been more than a few times on this trip where I just need to pinch myself at my own good fortune. Here I was completely happy in a place that I couldn't have imagined in even my best of dreams, with Kelly beside me. I'm not sure that I have words in my vocabulary to describe that moment, so I won't try. The next day it was time to move on to Gorme, in Cappadocýa which is like Turkey's answer to the Grand Canyon. But that's another story.

Tree Houses

Who would have ever thought that a re-make of the tree house that the Swýss Famýly Robinson lived in would exsist...well it does and we stayed in one of them last night. A whole heap of small tree houses linked into one another with stair cases here and there and a river running along the side. We have ended up in Olympos and explored the ruins of the ancient city and climbed the mountain to see the Chirmara-the place where the Olympic flame first ...
