The Quebec theme continued into this past week. Marc had four French Canadian friends visiting from Drummondville, Quebec, and in order to escape from the South Carolinians camping in my house I spent most of the week and weekend tagging along with them. Actually work was very interesting this week. With CHRAJ we did a radio broadcast on Eagle FM on the abuse of power by politicians and the police and we did our last inspection of a 'slum' community outside Cape Coast. There was something ver...
Axim, Ghana amalawskiMost of the group has left and I'm taking a couple days R&R at the most beautiful beach I've ever seen in Axim. It's about 60 km West of Elmina/Cape Coast and a very easy tro-tro ride with one transfer (about 3 hours). We're at the Axim Beach Hotel which my guide book said was a must see - they weren't kidding!!!!! The hotel is up on a hill overlooking the ocean - there's little bungalows and then some double and single rooms. No A/C but with the breeze from the ocean a fan is quite enoug...
Axim, Ghana kimber1974After 4 glorious days in Axim, I decided that paradise can only last so long. I started to get a little too much sun and missed having a bathroom attached to my room (I know, I'm spoiled, more on that below). On the trotro from Axim to Takoradi I met a Peace Corps volunteer who has been in Takoradi for the last 18 months. After our discussion I've decided that while the Peace Corps might have been fun after college, I think I'm a little too old for it now (it's understandable why most volunte...
Elmina, Ghana kimber1974... and showed them. by this time the group had grown to probably over ten kids--all surrounding me. then it got a little out of hand--the kids slapped my butt, grabbed my chest, and were trying to pull the camera from my hands or push it up in position for me to take a picture of them. I usually get really uncomfortable in these situations because i know that personal space is an entirely different concept over here (if they even have a grasp of the concept at all)---but at ...
Busua, Ghana ellebee88... a small world! Lacey and I played basketball together at Redlands and thanks to the social networking of Facebook connected here last night. We met at the Accra Mall of all places which was indeed a shock to walk in to. The mall is certainly for the upper-crest of the country and was a drastic change from the villages I had spent my last days at. Lacey is in Ghana for the month conducting research and testing products in health centers around the country for her PhD through ...
Akwidaa, Ghana, Ghana sherrypace... times during the trip! Once at the park I was teamed up with Emmanuel though so I had tons of fun. It is really funny when he talks to the children in his super serious teacher voice when he is normally always giggling. It makes me laugh and I have to turn around so the kids don't see me cracking up at him. If he sees me laughing he starts laughing too but the kids still listen to him. They pay absolutely no attention to anything I say. The park has an amazing ...
Akwidaa, Ghana travelingdivaBack from my vacation to my laborious job here in Ghana. I went into Takoradi today with Katherine as we both had errands to run (not work related). We got a ride to the junction then tro-ed it to the big town. I was going to say city but I think that would be misleading. Anyway, our day in town was pretty uneventful until the ride back. The tro tro from Agona to Akwidaa sat for at least an hour waiting to fill up before leaving the station ...
Akwidaa, Ghana travelingdiva... at us as we pass. The young children yell "my friend! My friend!" to get our attention. Goats are scavenging all around us. Chickens and their chicks are always crossing the road. Actually it is just a dirt path that weaves its way between the shelters. Sheep look at us and let out an unconcerned baa. Once we have weaved our path to the bridge and crossed from Old Town to New Town, school children start walking with us. "My friend! My friend! What ...
Akwidaa, Ghana travelingdiva... not, but hopefully after our meetings today they are now. After the meetings we walked back to the lodge and had the rest of the day off. It was very hot today. I did a lot of reading and dived into the surf with the girls. It was actually really good exercise trying to swim against the current, which is pretty strong here. We planned some weekend trips for our upcoming days off while we are all together. So far the food here has been really good. I also met some ...
