... enter different photos from the different countries and places I have been this summer.
A mixture of many destinations!!!
My next trip is going to be in Cyprus - the Island I was born and brought up.
It will be a blog dedicated just to this island!
... the empire, Constantine the XI was crowned here in 1449 before the fall to the Ottomans in 1453. The churches have intact frescos and the 3 walls keep out the invading barbarians.
Our next town was another mideval seaside village Monemvasia. It is a walled village with 26 churchs and only 8 inhabitants. It sits on a island which became seperated from the mainland in the earthquakes of 345 CE and is connected only by a narrow causeway. This makes it especially protected from invaders ...
... I got a room with 4 beds completely to myself for 11 euros a night - not a bad deal! On Friday morning, I took the first bus out to ancient Mycanae, king Agamemnon's citadel (the leader of the Trojan War). Similarly to Delphi, this ancient city is tucked away in the mountains, making it a very peaceful place to spend the day (despite the few groups of tourists, which I could luckily avoid with ease). I was glad to find good explanations on the site ...
Peloponnese, Greece canadianjulie... part of the island, took the wrong bus stop and had an interesting conversation with a woman who helped me contact the pension for pickup. Michael, the owner of the pension, was great. He spent the ride to his place telling me about his favorite soccer players and how he so much enjoys German soccer (because the play hard). My short stay in Syros was spent relaxing on the nearby beach and drinking and eating with Michael and some of ...
Dodecanese, Greece broncos... The museum had trophies from famous Greek runners including one from a guy that won Boston and many other top marathons in the 1950's. Each Olympic marathon had a cool exhibit with details of the race including top finishers and a description of how the race unfolded. The museum was small but the information nicely presented. They didn't have that much in the way of souveniers but I picked up a couple of things. Maria was so ...
Marathon, Attica, Greece rnriggins... Hydra was one of most beautiful island amongst the three. Finally, Aegina - the place where pistachios were grown. Their pistachios, unlike the ones we get at home, are more sour in taste and tinier in size. It was in Aegina that we got the 2nd chance to taste ouzo again with ...
Saronic Gulf Islands, Greece ikanbilis... BC. The Romans only rebuilt the city a century later. We were told that earthquakes and centuries of pillage had left little standing of Ancient Corinth except remnants of once grand buildings. Though narrow, the canal was supposedly just wide enough for a cruise ship to pass. Unfortunately, we were not one of the fortunate few to be on a cruise across the canal that day ...
Peloponnese, Greece ikanbilis... besuchen.
STENI EVIAS, Greece evia... There is not much to see at Marathon but the implications of the battle resound to modern times as it allowed ancient Greek society to prosper and bloom in which democracy, philosophy, artistic techniques, as well as other advances in thought were experiented with and enacted.
Marathon, Greece sojournerWe took many photos of the boat at that stage, since there's not much to see or do in Kimi in mid-september, let's be honnest. A few are displayed here, among others you will appreciate the original 1964 life raft, one we're happy we didn't have to use ;-) (we were close twice though). Also, I remember we had a party that night and I still excpect your pictures, Tony ! No censorship accepted !
