... were up to their usual nonsense for our journey home – we docked at Hell-Ville harbor on our last day, thinking we’d have hours to kill and to go shopping (and have pizza – kids were craving it!) before having to head to the airport – however, we received panicked phone calls that the flight to Antananarivo had been brought forward from 5pm to 1pm!! I have never heard of that! So we had to dash to the airport, and were not able to buy one of ...
... ropes back, Steve said they were not suitable as they were green – trying to make a joke – which of course they did not get…
... We saw lots of different plants that are used for medicinal purposes, wild growing coffee, saffron, vanilla, as well as a strange green spiky fruit called a jack fruit, and lots of paw paw and banana trees!
Then we headed back to the boat and we all had a go at rowing - Steve, our guide and the boat owner did it all the way, but it was very hot!
We had lunch and came back to the hotel to chill for a few hours, before ...
... of ylang ylang, and the air is fragrant with its particular smell. The trees grow very tall, but for ease of picking the flowers they are pruned to grow no higher than 2 metres, so everywhere we saw lots of trees that looked as if a storm had broken them down. We saw the copper vats that the perfume is distilled in - apparently the recipe is 500kg of flowers + 300 litres of water, just to make 12 litres of ylang ylang oil ...
... and the owner (Gerard - we have not met Francine yet) said "Bienvenue les voyageurs braves" - welcome brave travellers!!
Other initial impressions:
- we can hear the Indian ocean, it's about 20 metres away, in the dark
- 3 ply loo roll (even Madagascar still influenced by French obsession with their bums and what comes out of it!)
