    ... The area covered by the grottoes is surprisingly large, and there were lots of 'wow!' moments. The grottoes are a UNESCO world heritage site and were started around 493 and continuously built for 400 years. There are 1300 caves and over 100,000 statues, all carved out of very hard rock. The grottoes are on either side of the Yi River, and it was really nice to see a body of water again!
