... leaving West Monroe and taking a few pictures of other locations seen on the show, we soon entered into Mississippi. After a small confusion with the road signs we realized we actually were driving in the correct direction. A customer at the gas station where Jessica stopped to use the restroom and grab a Coke confirmed our route. It was fifteen miles down the road before we found I-55. The interstate south through Mississippi was quite impressive; nicely paved ...

... it to our house for the next 3 nights, which was owned by 3 girls who studied locally, and the street seemed like quite a nice neighbourhood, compared to some of the others we had seen on our way! The next morning we took off and made a direct route to the French Quarter. This place was a series of streets, with many typical New Orleans shops, with Madrid gras themes running throughout, with the beads, masks, and witchcraft. After a bit of browsing, Lois could not ...

After our tour, we wandered the streets of New Orleans for a while. Watching the street scape change from the odd busker / group of musicians, into a loud, vibrant mass of entertainment.
As night fell, we ducked into a relatively family orientated (big ...

It took a third staff member to finally get her in her chair before we could start the admission process. At about 2:00a we were in the ER waiting to see a doctor. The hallways were lined with homeless drunks who the police told to come to the hospital since it was in the 30s and they had no where else to go. Seemed like an abuse of ...

... to what I'd expected. I thought it would be a wide road with plenty of restaurants and bars, with a certain amount of classiness. There was nothing classy about this area.

It was almost entirely bars, and was dirty and trashy. At 5pm on Friday there were drunk tourists, barely of age, staggering around with plastic cups of alcohol in hand. We bought a beer each and walked most of the length ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Avenue Garden Hotel New Orleans

    Loved my stay

    from

My sister and I stayed at the hotel in july, the staff was wonderful to us very polite and helpful. The rooms were very nice. it was also very peaceful there. I find it was right in the middle of everythign we wanted to do especially the trolley car passing right infront. When i go back to New orlean Avenue Garden Hotel is where I will stay at.

    Wonderful place and wonderful staff

    from

Ignore all the bad reviews about this place! We were very hesitant to stay here because of the bad reviews, but the location and price couldnt be beat! When we came down St. Charles Ave, we were pleasantly suprised by the exterior. We checked into our room and had a front room with the window facing St. Charles and the porch. It was very loud and asked to be moved. They immediately gave us the room next door. The room was very nice with a dark wood four poster bed and New Orleans artwork on the walls. The sitting room was great with a computer connected to the internet, a couch and bookshelf full of books. Avenue Garden has a great location literally right in front of a streetcar pickup and Voodoo BBQ and St. Charles Tavern on each side. Perfect for the late night snacks or beers! We parked on the street beside St.

    Warning

    from

WARNING-DO NOT park your car on St. Charles Avenue (in front of the hotel). Although this hotel claims to have garaged parking, spaces are very limited. We stayed on a Sunday night, and were told by 7pm that there were no more spots available. Our only other choice was to park on the street. My car was broken into that night, and I later found out that another visitor's car was broken into the previous night. Don't take your chances-stay somewhere else!!!!

    Nice little place

    from

I liked this hotel. It was very charming with alot of character. If you are into the ritzy, hoity toity hotels dont stay here, it is a very down to earth cozy, simple place. Great price for St. Charles Street!!

    Better than expected

    from

We chose this hotel from the web based on the attractive price (well below the average for New Orleans) and were prepared for accomodations and service commenserate with the cost. We were pleasantly mistaken. Nice staff, large clean rooms, ample continental breakfast were just a few of the nice surprises. No internet in the rooms but the guest computer station, with high speed connection, was always open to check email or for other online tasks. Don't be fooled by the bad reviews you might read. The management changed and this is a top notch operation that will satisfy all but the most discriminating guests. We've stayed in bigger, more expensive hotels in much larger cities and this is definitely competetive in most ways. No weight room or pool but for the tourist on a buget this is a conveniently located and comfortable place to stay.

    Quaint Hotel in good area

    from

We found this hotel at hotels where we got an excellent rate. The hotel has PRIVATE enclosed parking! Left a motorcycle there all weekend where it was perfectly safe. The area is decent, very convenient as the streetcar is right outside. The room was rather small but newly refinished with magnificent high ceilings. The bed was comfortable, the modest breakfast was enjoyable and the staff were helpful and friendly. It felt like we were staying in a bed and breakfast or a friend's home. The place is very quaint. For the price, this was an excellent location. Recommended to anyone visiting the city on a budget.

    Cool hotel, great price

    from

We got great prices for JazzFest. The room was smallish but clean and well-stocked. Comfy mattress, too. The service was very good, and everybody was amazingly friendly and helpful (including the owner.) We loved the courtyard, and the computer in the sitting room was great for internet/e-mail access. The neighborhood is not the fanciest, but it's fine and refreshingly un-touristy, and within walking distance of all kinds of good restaurants, clubs, museums, etc. Not the place to stay if you're into sterile, but great if you're looking for a homey, friendly place.

    Caution

    from

OK! The hotel was clean, and the housekeepers were so kind, as was ONE concierge-kristin. The rooms were so very sad, and smelly if you don't smoke. The owner is a complete ***. He over booked and as a result moved our room every day of the four days we were there. (never once carrying our bags) Very unapologetic about his mistake. Another group of people experienced the same thing while we were there. Don't fool yourself into thinking it is the garden district- its the industrial ugly part of town. MAJOR BONUS yes the street car is so perfect and convenient. Double check the reserv. and it should be fine. If your okay with staying in a clean dive this is good. But shop around

    Best Value in New Orleans

    from

Three things make this Hotel stand out. 1)GREAT LOCATION, located on St. Charles Avenue, right in front of the street car line, easy walking distance to several restaurants, bars, drug store, Antique stores & shops. 2)GREAT STAFF, everyone was more than couteous, in fact down right friendly! 3)GREAT PRICE, less than $70(2 people)which includes breakfast. The "Avenue Garden" is a smaller Hotel(22 rooms), which consists of 2 older homes connected to form rooms with character and local flavor that my wife and I found quite charming. If, you are looking for a big glamourous hotel, with big glamourous rooms, this ain't the place for you, however if you looking for value and some really nice folks, your not going to beat this place! When we return to New orleans this is where we will stay!!

Small, friendly hotel in the Lower Garden District

    from

With just 22 rooms (including 4 suites), the Avenue Garden Hotel is small. But the accommodations are quaint and the staff friendly. The concierge is always happy to call a cab for you. The hotel, comprised of two century-old townhouses, is sandwiched between a bridal shop and the VooDoo BBQ-a restaurant that also sells the local brew-Abita! Within several blocks, you'll find the St. Charles Tavern, KFC, Burger King, and Office Depot, along with some venerable old homes and some very nice restaurants.
