KYKKOS MONASTERY IN TROODOS

... It possesses one of three icons attributed to Saint Luke the Evangelist. The icon, covered in silver gilt, is in a shrine made of tortoise shell and mother-of-pearl that stands in front of the iconostasis.

The monastery is also famous for its museum, located within the monastery grounds, which houses an impressive collection of icons, woodcarvings, manuscripts, and other Cypriot ...

Greek Cypriots are also friendly

... was very friendly and helpful. The local beer was very nice. Keo. The waiter showed us some other places on our map to go visit while we walked around. Had a look at a local fruit and vege market which was quite good but much the same as ours only with a few different products like dates, little fish etc. Headed back on the shuttle at 2pm which was long enough. Had a rest and then went to Oasis to watch sail out. Clocks back 1 hour and I don't know why.

An Unexpected Stop.

... way out is to go to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and try and get a ferry to main land Turkey. We have tried asking people in the Republic about this, but this is taboo. No one in the Republic (except our drunk hostelier, who really doesn't give reliable information) will talk about Northern Cyprus let alone tell you how to get out of there.

OH! and by the way the rule is ...

Troodos Trouble

... hard to find a
church, although in retrospect we could have tried a bit harder. We
got into Limassol and once again struggled a bit trying to find the
hotel but we managed. We went out for a wander and lunch and then
had a leisurely afternoon by the pool. That night we discovered the
old castle and tried the meat mezze. It was a nice night and
Limassol proved to be a worthwhile stop in Cyprus.

... and citrus. In summer they have to close the airport (June-July) due to the extremely high humidity creating a fog that you can barely see your hand in front of your face. Busy little port lots of container ships and there seemed to be a fish farm of some discription. Leaving port and I have just counted 14 large cargo ships waiting to dock geez puts our little Napier Port to shame huh? Deb

Southern Cyprus, Again

... best mosaics !!! Pafos was quite horrid again, but the mosaics are good. This time we visited the fort, good views of the water !!! The Royal Tombs had not changed, actually I missed some last time, so it was good to return. We kept driving till we hit the far left corner, and there it was, Aphrodite's pool. Small, uninteresting, but there were two eels in it !!! To get back we decided to go across the mountains. For over two ...

Living in Ecuador and the Problems that go with it

... in another week as the exchange rate is better now. It's something like $1.98 NZ dollar to $1 US. He plans to move there and start a business but he can put his money there before he actually moves. Anyhow, I asked Richard what Maria's office phone number is and he gave it to me. it was the same that I had, so I called again and again I got 'the number is incorrect.' I don't see how Maria can do good business. I think ...

Up to Kykos

We set off quite early to drive up to the Kykos Monestary, one of the more famous monestaries high up in the mountains where Archbishop Makarios retired to and is buried (he was the first and fourth president of Cyprus). We took our time driving up, the roads are good but very twisting, and there are some magnificent views that should be stopped at to take in properly. On the way up the mountains we ...

... bad rock" There was a custom in the old times that people that were about to get married used to dance around a big rock. However an incident happened, and the rock fell on the groom and killed him, so they named that rock and the village as “bad rock”
