Our guide for the day had a well worn book with illustrations that (if we could have seen them through the sea of IPads taking photos) show how it probably was. We left Chania early on Thursday morning by bus and headed for Heraklion, the capital of Crete. It is a larger city and many say it isn't too interesting but we liked the feel of it, especially after the crowded, noisy old city of Chania. Santorini, classically Thera, and officially Thira; is located in the southern Aegean Sea and part of an island chain (archipelago). The chain was created from a single island due to a huge volcanic eruption. One theory suggests that the Thera eruption was actually where the Atlantis legend originated.

... Chronologically, it spans 5500 years from Neolithic to Roman times. The setup was beautiful and I was buzzing around snapping pictures of everything. I have since learned that I was also a bit of an amusement to the rest of my group! They figured I'd end up so confused I wouldn't know what write-up went with what picture!! Horrors ...
