Good to be travelling again!

We flew from Ko Samui to Bangkok and then on to Vientiane, care of Air Asia. I have to say that AA have been great all through our travels.

Arriving at the airport at Vientiane, we had to go through passport control and complete paperwork that unfortunately wasn't available on our flight. Chaos ensued with all the passengers …

What a dump of a city.....

Vientiane proved a real disappointment, grubby, faded and in need of a good injection of atmosphere. Yes there is a lot of new buildings going up, mainly with foreign investment and yes areas such as the Presidential Palace and Embassy's were well manicured and tended, but behind the facade lay dirty grubby backstreets full of inhabitants that …

Funny how a short flight can take all day

Up fairly early and after breakfast packed my bag and left it in reception. I hate waiting for flights as you have that sort of 'Homeless' feeling with no room to go back to. Went for a wander and was going to hang about in the Lin Cafe which is a rather nice stylish cafe in the 'Old Quarter' of Savannakhet. However I saw a tall guy walk up with …

Good morning birthday boy! Cards opened and no internet to say thanks! In fact the whole street was without power as the electricity company was upgrading the overhead power lines. We stayed on our balcony as long as we could to enjoy the view of the river and all the slow traffic up and down, truly memorable.
A 4 hour bus drive took us to …

Goodbye Laos, hello Vietnam

The drive from Vang Vieng was just four hours and thankfully on pretty straight and flat roads. We arrived in Vientiane, the capital of Laos around lunchtime. It's a busy little place, with the chaos being a bit more orderly than Bangkok. There are traffic lights, some parking bays, clearly marked lanes and motorbikes and tuk-tuks drive much less …

At first the location appears poor but it's a short walk to decent restaurants and bars. Also handy for laundries. Nice quiet street. Well furnished rooms and lobby. Good breakfast esp if you get the baguettes just as they arrive from the bakery. seems to be used by 'Explore' for their group tours.

The second time I stayed here I got a single room. OK no TV no fridge but otherwise ame standard and at $15 a real steal!
