For our third day of the rail pass, we zoomed off to Obuse, near the Japanese alps, north west of Tokyo. This involved first getting the bullet train to Nagano, then getting a local train to Obuse, the smallest town in that area. It was a very attractive little place, with pretty houses and well kept flowerbeds. So, you might be wondering why we came here, well, this is where the artist Hokosai painted in his final years, and there is a museum here showcasing some of his work ...
Obuse, Chubu, Japan markandcharNagano... ici Nagano.
Nagano, Chubu, Japan clemandpo... dowry, Matsumoto castle is strictly defense minded--the lord doesn't live in the castle and every room has vantage points, stone drops and arrow and musket holes. Surprisingly, guns came to Japan in the 1600s, way earlier than I thought. Spent a couple of pleasant hours wandering the attached park and Matsumoto city museum and climbing the steep (according to the plaques somewhere between 45 and 62 degrees) stairs. But soon, Nagano was calling, as I had ...
Nagano, Chubu, Japan mchao... ours - guess pregnant women and women with young children CAN travel and see these amazing places!
We rushed back to catch the bus back to the train station where we walked around the town of Nagano for a few hours. It's well worth a look to see one of the oldest shrines in Japan - apparently there is an underground room where you can walk underneath the shrine and discover the secrets of life - but apparently this secret can only be ...
... have been cool, but it got, um, burnt down by some poor sod in the 40's. Lucky for him, he didn't have to have a go at seppuku with the sharp end of a sword cos the emperor didn't really like the buildings he burnt down anyway... Speaking of American, the young Japanese in Osaka seem to have embraced American culture - there are streets full of shops selling American clothes, music and accessories, and then there's those that wear all that, er, stuff. Go ...
Tokyo, Kanto, Japan d_muzzoI am going to keep the chat to a minimum here and let the (many) photos do the talking. I went to Nagano to see the "Snow Monkeys". They were awesome. After a short 2km hike through snowy forested mountains, suddenly there were monkeys running across the path - and they literally came within an inch of my feet! Well worth the visit.
On vera ca demain!
Hakuba-mura, Chubu, Japan frdrick... to come by to take us back into town. Eventually one arrived and we walked up to the Zenkoji Temple past a street full of temple residences.
We wandered around the temple complex and gardens and even saw someone ringling the large bell using a wooden log before walking back down to the train station and catching the train back to Tokyo.
