P.O. Box 51 Caye Caulker, Belize Cayes, Belize, 226-0370
I was up very early the next morning to get my 8am bus to Chetumal which is a town in Mexico very close to the border with Belize. My aim was to get to Caye Caulker which is an island off Belize City, but it was going to be tight to do in a day. Almost impossible I thought upon arriving at Chetumal at around midday and finding that the next bus wasn't leaving until 2.30pm and the last ferry was leaving Belize City to Caye Caulker at 5.30 and the bus ride was ...
Caye Caulker, Belize Cayes, Belize julesjb... swelters and bakes like some sort of breezeless third world convection oven. The sun and humidty just beat you into submission and the island absolutely languishes in the heat. We showed up with no plan, no reservations and no agenda. It was too hot to look around too long for a room and the second place seemed ok for about $25 a room. It was barebones but clean...no a/c, just a fan, and it was basically a wooden box on ...
Caye Caulker, Belize Cayes, Belize atlpilot36... have free run of the place and cavort around in packs of three or four, chasing each other, taking off after passing golf carts, swimming, and by about 6pm, napping in the streets. Much to Mom's dismay we were adopted by a little brindle pitbull we named (how original) "Brindy," who, after I gave her a pat and fed her a bit of key lime cake, took to following us around and jumping in our golf cart for a free ride. I don't even want to think of the fleas! But you know how I'm a ...
Caye Caulker, Belize Cayes, Belize mschwartz... the snapper came served with a curried rice and potatoes plus a rum punch and desert was a ice-cream chocolate biscuit cheesecake. Heaven. We walked the streets and climbed the 3 flights of stairs to the I & I bar - the local reggae place. We enjoyed our drinks on the open air deck with the locals who all look stoned - err because they probably are! I left round midnight and went back to the hotel - walking through the creepy ...
Caye Caulker, Belize Cayes, Belize chooklotto... bought some bait and set off. Early on that day, a local fisherman gave us a couple of large snappers - which we quickly procured an ice box for and optimistically carried with us all day to save us running back to it with each fish we caught. Needless to say, by the end of the night, they were the best travelled fish ever - weŽd carried the bloody things from one end of the island to the other and caught nothing else!
As ...
... put up tents in dark and wind - hey ho. Still rum punch & prawn supper makes life better and its not often you sleep on an island about 400 yards around. Unknown mayhem breaks out at 1am & in the morning when thereŽs no boat we find the Captain crushed his big toe in the engine room & is in Bwelize hospital. Luckily for us the boat is back by 8am with a new captain & its back to sea for us. Another lazy day & arrive in the light at Tobaaco Caye which has a ...
Caye Caulker, Belize pilgrim143... the first 1-2 hours or so the landscape and the people seem almost like we are still where we have come from but here was different, as soon as we crossed the border the locals had a kind of Jamaican look which we didn't expect, vastly different from Mexicans and much to our surprise. The land too did not resemble much of Mexico and straight away you could tell that this was the poorest of the 3 countries within the area. Whilst driving the countryside ...
Belize City, Belize District, Belize nikandads2008... tropical island seemed too good to be true. I had read on the forums that reservations were not needed in advance for May on Caye Caulker; even when trying to book a place as popular as Treetops. Now that we were seeing the crowd heading to Caye Caulker, we started to worry about the likelihood of actually getting a room at Treetops and started evaluating backup options. Before we left the States, we had also decided that we wanted to ...
Caye Caulker, Belize Cayes, Belize boognishWe set off this morning for Cucumber Beach Marina which is a place we can camp at for the next week whilst looking around Belize City and catching up with some chores. At the moment we are parked up about 50 feet from the sea enjoying a nice cooling breeze as we write this. 14th.- Today we went into town to have a look around. The streets are quite small so it is a good job we did not bring the vehicle. We went down to the swing bridge ...
Belize City, Belize mikeandmary... I hatched a master plan there and then to spend my money on beer so no-one could rob it and it worked! There is alot to be said for the extra attributes of beer! One notable incident that happened in Belize city was when I sparked up a conversation with an Indian shop keeper. When he discovered I was from Glasgow he said " I am friends with the Glasgow airport bombers". IŽll be honest, I didnŽt know what to retort to this, it was a bit of a ...
