... chicken in a creamy local sauce and I had bryndzove halusky so slaninou (little dumplings about the size of a pea made from potato dough mixed with a kind of sheep's cheese). Bryan had a couple of local beers and I had a couple of borovickas (local spirit distilled from juniper berry). It was nice - but it was hard to get service, then hard to get and pay the bill. It came to less than 22 Euro, just over $A30, so only tipped $2.

          North and East to Vienna

The Czech and Slovakian Republics were only constituted as independent countries in 1993, so hadn't even been out of communism ten years when I was here in the fall of '99. It was worth the stop and both of us mentioned its colour, architecture and charm might have boosted it to the top of our favourite churches list.

From the church we walked across town via the river front to the Bratislava Palace, a beautiful stately home, now converted into galleries and function spaces which offer panaromic ...

Welcome to the stomping grounds of Mozart, Liszt, Schubert and Beethoven. Although none of these composers were actually born in Vienna they spent a large part of their life here as Vienna was considered an inspirational place. Following another (big) breakfast we headed out on the coach for a tour to Schönbrunn Palace. It is another huge palace and is modelled on the Palace ...

05:10 - Just approaching the lock at Greifenstein. Sun just rising with a brilliant red sky, no rain up there tho. Quite a few jet-streams in the sky from aircraft. Cool morning again with a heavy dew out on deck. Locks here fairly substantial allowing considerably bigger vessels than us to get up the Danube as far as Passau - maybe further? Only 10 km to where we will berth ...
