A Day (or two) in the Life of Benita

Yesterday, was a grey day. I woke in the night to the rain splattering on the side of the house, trying to blow us over. Luckily all the houses here are built to withstand gale force winds, with their cement from the ground break, to the pronged points in the sky of the rod iron spikes belonging to the unfinished apartment above. The Good News is I generally sleep well with the rain pounding out a rhythm to lull me to sleep. Unfortunately, the winds and fury of ...

Back to the Roots

... Do you Remember me!? To which I grab her cheeks and say of course!!! We drove up and up and up a large hill to arrive in Sant'Onofrio, which is where my grandparents grew up, and where Zio and Zia live, and Greg and Anna stay in the summers when they are not working or in school. And it is beautiful!! I ddn't get to see much of it my firs night as it is getting dark rather early these days (and flipping cold ...

South Italy-My holiday in Calabria, Tropea

San Giorgio Morgeto

... in the motherland. San Giorgio Morgeto is a quiet village on the side of a mountain in the Aspromonte National Park. Although it is a town of about 3,000 people, they all seem like family. It was amazing to walk the streets and not only get a very pleasant 'Buon giorno' from people, but on a number of occasions we were asked in to peoples homes for coffee, a glass of wine, lunch, and even some grappa. It was wonderful hospitality. We saw a ...

The Deep South (of Italy)

... fascinating, as they were trying to upstage the French court, but for me it's all too monumentalist and egotistical. Our next night is at the grooviest youth hostel (called Seven Hostel) in which I've ever stayed, in Sorrento, on the southern edge of the bay of Naples. It's like a designer boutique hotel, and it has this great terrace with circular couches with umbrellas over them, for sleeping during the day (or night I guess) - would love to have done it but ...

Tropea - I had no idea!

... the weather was just perfest for swimming. What an amazing place! Also fortunately it isn't one of the places in Italy taken over by tourists so the town is very down to earth and not full of all these flashy hotels and restaurants like we found on Capri. While we were driving along one day we saw a sign saying this way to the site where Jesus appeared in 1932 and again at ...

In the XIIIth century, the vernacular grew further and further away from Latin itself to become a separate literary language the Cantico delle Creature (Song of ALL Creatures) by St. Francis of Assisi was probably written in 1225 and is the earliest poetic work ...

The Hunt for the La Praia Hotel

... search we stopped off at a gas station to ask for directions. The directions that Danielle managed to piece together pointed us in the direction north of the city and off we went, we did manage to find a hotel, but it was not the La Praia. One turn led to another and soon we found ourselves in the heart of the old streets of Tropea, barely wide enough for our small Ford Festiva to fit in. At one point we stopped ...

With the family in CALABRIA! Sant'Onofrio & more
