Nome was our second stop of this weekend trip. It was a 45 minute flight south of Kotzebue. I think we were 30 miles above the Arctic Circle in Kotzebue and Nome is probably about 50 miles south of the Arctic Circle. At one time Nome was the most populated city in Alaska with over 12,000 residents, but not it has about 3,500. It is famous for the finish line of the Iditarod dog sled race and claiming to be the largest ...

Once we visited a few gift shops in town, we headed out of town on the Nome-Council road. This ...

... spun into yarn and knitted into scarves, hats, and other items. The qiviut is harvested at the Musk Ox Farm and then sent to native villages to be knitted and sold. The Musk Ox farm also offers tours where guests can learn about the history of the farm, learn about the Musk Ox, and meet and pet the animals. The Musk Ox love dandelions and grass so are always eager for guests to come and feed them. They are really neat animals to ...

    Leaving home

A travel blog entry by ak49 on Oct 24, 2008

It's about time to leave home after 5 months of constant work and trying to set everything up. At least the weather here is sunny even though all of Alaska is now frozen over. Scheduled to leave here in about 30 mins, so only have time to say thanks mom & dad. Everyone in Nome take care. The first step ...
