A nice place even without steam action!

... just a couple of times a month at most. The steam shed is still here and locomotives are kept serviced for these trains but it is not quite the same as what was a regular event only a few years ago. This is after all progress!

Wolsztyn is however a pleasant little town with a number of nice restaurants, bars, coffee shops and bakers plus some reasonable hotels and for somewhere pretty much in the middle of nowhere a chance of getting an English menu ...

... artifacts from the camp (some of which were obtained by Archeologists and have been buried for many years). There’s an excellent model of the north camp showing what it looked like at the time of The Great Escape, which helped to put things in perspective. They also had uniforms from each of the armed forces that were incarcerated there. I spent some time looking at the displays and then started towards the recreation of Hut 104, which showed what it may ...

... Republic. We were supposed to be on the train headed to the Czech Republic, but instead, we woke up in Poland. I was trying remain calm and process what to do. Meanwhile, Emma is freaking out because she didn't have any of her possessions with her. No wallet, no passport, no way to get in contact with anyone, no shoes. Thank goodness I brought my purse with me, even after Emma questioned me for using it as a pillow.
She and I tried to explain to the conductor ...

... about a week at Duluft Luft, on October 15, 1942, Jim Billig Sr. was transferred to Stalag Luft 3, a prison camp in what us now Zagan, Poland... about 2.5 hours SE from Berlin. He would remain in this camp until the forced march to StalagVIIA, on January 27,1945.

When we arrived at the museum which is now located at the site of Stalag Luft 3, Jim introduced himself as the son of an American pilot who spent nearly 2.5 years there. ...
