... watching in almost silence for that first glimpse through the rain. Then in the distance he appeared, a lone lead rider. Hair standing on end stuff for me, a really special moment to see my first rider at the Tour. The leader speed past and was shortly followed by the remainder of the peleton. Five minutes later it was over and the crowd headed back down the hill to the town proper. Hard to believe I had attended the Tour De France....might have to do it again ...

I tried to resist, but I'm glad I relented.

... valley - 'Haute' means 'high' in French - which is useful preparation as pre-Alps training. It has also worked out well as an escape from the rain that began just after I arrived at the hotel.

I enjoyed a very pleasant set menu in a nearby restaurant this lunchtime. I'm treating it as my main meal of the day to avoid paying the high prices here in thehotel. I have pate, bread and fruit in my rucksack that I'll eat in my room later. I think France ...

... little wooden bungalows for two nights so we could do some cooking instead of restaurant eating. Unfortunately, we only had a cursory peek in the window of the bungalow, taken in by its' cute exterior, and when we moved it, found it dark and grimy. Even the dishes were not all that clean.

Even a new electric bike shop had a blues/jazz quartet playing outside the shop. It is also the French capital of watchmaking and has a fascinating Museum of Time that we also toured. We didn't fit in a visit however to the amazing Astronomical Clock (1870) in the cathedral of Saint-Jean.
