Martinique to Trinidad

... celebrations in Trinidad. Martinique was remembered fondly in my mind as having wonderful French cheeses and wines. As we neared the island, our main sail blew out. The good news about sailing in the Caribbean is that there is wind and sun, the bad news is that there is wind and sun. The sun's UV rays eat away at the sails much quicker than anything Alaska can throw at them. But other good news about Martinique is that we found a sail maker there who looked at it ...

New Years Eve........What New Years Eve?

After a windblown passage across from St Lucia (it always blows here! I was under the impression that the Caribbean Islands were the ideal cruising grounds, gentle breezes, idyllic anchorages, but so far the wind hasn't dropped below 20knots, much of it over 30knots. I suppose this is normal, after all we are in the trade wind belt.) We found a protected little anchorage on the Southern end of Martinique. The boys were straight into the water, keen to get their ...

Christmas In The Caribbean

We left Barbados for the island of St Lucia which is to the north west, its an old volcanic island with amazing peaks and prehistoric looking jungle fringed by white sand beaches and coconut palms. Our destination was Rodney Bay right at the north of the island to spend Christmas at the marina with the Aussies, Kiwis, Canadians, French, German, American, British etc etc . On Christmas Eve we took a bus ride into Castries which is the capital to have a look around at the ...

First Day at the beach

We went to this beautiful beach less than five minutes from our hotel room. It was super amazing, the fish actually we by my feet. Christina screamed like a baby, she freaks out at the site of live fish. She yelled at Nemo and flounder. Reduit Beach, St, Lucia's acclaimed best beach.

... of cannon range? According to another source, the French succeeded in reclaiming the island by wrecking some boats filled with casks of rum. After the British drank themselves silly, the French took the upper hand and got their island back. Again, we ask why? They could have let the Brits starve themselves off and saved the rum. We continued north and anchored once again in the beautiful waters of Grand Anse D'arlet. This time ...

Heading North

16/04/08, Wednesday, 18:00, St. Pierre, Martinique Had a nice sail up here today - the wind and current were with us. Mountains here are great. Virgin Mary statue overlooking the town. Watched a pod of dolphins play in clear water on our bow. They were so close, I could hear them breathe when they surfaced.

15/04/08, Tuesday, 22:30, Rodney Bay Dinner and pool was great two nights ago. Had two great days after that hanging out at Scuttlebutts. Met crazy Norwegian guy there today. [No, seriously, this guy was nuts. He and his friends decided to quit their jobs, buy a boat, and sail around the world. One of them had been sailing before - they made him captain. My kind of people.]

... day. Jeff showed us the entire north end of the island, once again explaining everything we saw. We took a mini-hike to an area of sulfurous bubbling water from a volcanic vent on the road from Toucari to Pennville. In some places one just hears the hiss and in other places the water actually bubbles to the surface. We saw dasheen fields growing on amazingly steep inclines. Since all of the farming is done by hand it is especially impressive to see these steep farms. Jeff pointed ...

Fort de France - again

... Later, two evenings later. I attended a native music festival. I was the only caucasian that attended. I was visible for miles around. A fancy mix of reggea and modern rythms. After a feasty night, I drove south to St. Anne and rented a cottage for the remains of my stay at Martinique. Suddenly I had to go to FdF and my flight back to europe. A nice vacation, after all.
