... town, but we enjoyed window shopping, strolling through the park that circles the Lac du Annecy, and people watching. This weekend is the Fete du Lac Annecy, which apparently is the biggest thing that happens here all year. The set-up was intense and consumed the town-special parking, special highway exits, a laser light show in the middle of the lake (no joke-we saw them rehearsing), and an influx of tourists.

... make it back to Claire's house for dinner. Unfortunately, the street repair crews and very confusing roads of Annecy had other plans for us. The view at the top was amazing with Mont Blanc visible across Lake Annecy. After coming down we passed through some working villages and had lunch on the lake before returning home and dinner in the old ...

... distraction is always the scenery, flora and fauna. It is amazing what you can see when you are quietly riding a bike. Birds a plenty and animals too. Today I spotted a number of different birds ranging from small beautifully coloured finches to larger hawks and eagles. Even mister Reynard stepped out onto the road, he had a beautiful coat, but scarpered the minute he saw me closing.

The most unusual and plentiful animal I saw would have to be ...

    Rochefort

Next day we travelled on through the Vendee and Charente Maritime regions with an evening stay at Rochefort. A very interesting town, haunt of Cardinal Richilieu, and built as a naval defence base by Louis XIV. Much more our style, because it was small enough to walk about admiring the historic buildings and to see the pleasure harbour, and small commercial port. And it's the French home of oysters... Which they grade and sell like good ...
