... I wonder... what about a monument to the brave Africans who fought for their independence from what was often a brutal colonial rule?

All the same, it does seem that Portugal has healed better than other European former colonial powers. Here you do see the former colonizers and the formerly colonized living, socializing and intermarrying in multicultural neighborhoods.

Alvor was a treat. Arriving at about lunchtime we went to look at the Aire which was huge open and pretty full. Parked up by the beach instead and had Lunch and LUDO had a run before deciding to go to a site. We stayed for two nights in the 'tranquil' part of the camp. Hi all, we are still in Silves. Unbeknown to us, we seem to have landed on one of the best campsites around and now we are reluctant to move on. It is good as we are close to the historical town centre (5 mins) which is seriously old (still the Moors and Christians fighting after they kicked out the Romans), there is electric connections, free internet, a supermarket two minutes away, good showers, few tourists and loads ...
