Melbourne

Well, I left Sydney on Sunday morning at 7:45am. I was awake from 5:30 to get ready and get train from Revesby into Central. The train took 11 hours and 10 mins!!!!! That really doesn't sound as bad as the actual reality of sitting on a train surrounded by snoring, chattering people, staring at empty bushland and looking at miles and miles of eucalyptus trees. Believe me it really does lose it's appeal after an hour or so. Anyway, arrived into Southern Cross station at 6:55pm to lashing rain!...

Ocean Road to Melbourne

I got up early and watched the sunrise over the ocean from my balcony. It was a great way to start the day! As I was eating breakfast, a sulfur crested cockatoo landed on the railing of the balcony. I grabbed my camera, popped off the lense cap, focused and just as I touched the shutter release--it flew off. This same thing had happened to me a couple days ago in the Grampians at my little cabin there. Well, I packed up my stuff and checked out of Beacon Point. I drove down the hill to the be...

A Taste of Melbourne

I got up early this morning and checked out. The hotel stored my bags for me. Then, I was off to take the rental car back to the airport. I had two maps and I got directions from the girl at the front desk. Despite this, I got horribly lost and wandered around for over two hours. I stopped and asked for directions several times and most of the people I spoke to had no idea how to get to the airport, or couldn't articulate those directions with any degree of clarity. Eventually, I stumbled upo...

After Kaikora we headed south again but first we had a look around town. Just as we had hoped we came across more seals basking on the rocks and here we were able to walk up close but not too close as they may bite if disturbed. We also walked up to the lookout with more great views of the sea and the mountains, snow-capped in the background. After lunch at a winery, much sampling and delightful meals we arrived in Christchurch and again saw many No Vacancy signs but were directed to a nice c...

Sun, Feb 24th- Mebourne What a glorious city. Big. Bigger than I thought. Someone siad 3.8 million, I'll have to check. It's laid out on a grid and we were staying on the edge of the CBD so it wasn't hard to get around. They even have free shuttle buses and trolley cars around the CBD and nearby neighbourhoods which we took. Despite that I logged about 10 km yesterday alone. Fri. morning we walked over to the Victoria Market a huge food and merchandise market with stalls selling everything fr...

Really happy

from AdelaideTraveller
We only had a one night stay here but found the price and location excellent. We paid 80.00 for the night which included a continental breakfast ... an absolute bargain! The rooms were clean and spacious and we were fortunate enough to have a great view. Only downside was the guy on reception ... not the sort of person who should be front office, I found him to be rude. Would definitely say again.

Terrific value for money, but rather bland sterile atmosphere

from A TripAdvisor Member
We booked directly on the hotel website, which entitled us to a good deal with inclusive breakfast. The description of the room as a "suite" was certainly a bit of a stretch, just a bed with a small sofa and coffee table next to it, however it was clean and tastefully decorated. The views from the 10th floor are impressive, particularly at night.

Breakfast on the 4th floor was simple but fine, although if not included in your package, it might be better to buy in some breakfast foods from a nearby 7-11.

Parking was fine and reasonable value at 12.50 AUD per night. Be warned though that the car park, which makes up the first 3 floors of the hotel, is very tight and the scrapes on the walls testify to many previous insurance claims.

The hotel staff were generally professional but certainyl did not go out of their way to be that friendly, particularly the guy on in the evenings.

Good hotel - wish the service was better

from Shaz07
If you want to stay in this hotel, it's best to book it through the hotel's website cuz you'll get a better deal. I got mine at $89 a night and saved quite a bit of money that way.

The room is clean, simple and definitely quite small for a 'suite'. But overall, it's good and value for money. I appreciated the fact that they had Chinese MTV on the telly and the time they cleaned up my room even though I missed it cuz I overslept. =p

I admit the service esp by the male concierges wasn't that great (esp if you're coming back late at night), with one of the guys commenting that I was really making him work hard for his money when I requested for an additional card-key.

But in general, if you're looking for good, cheap accommodation without personalised service, this is the place. It's directly opposite the Telstra Dome and the gym there is pretty good. It's also nearby quite a few tram stops so it's easy to catch a tram down to the city. I don't recommend walking down to the city cuz if you're a tourist like me, chances are you'll get lost esp if you suck at reading maps!! ;)

Immaculate, well positioned hotel. Perfect for business, handy for play.

We got a good deal for the Atlantis through Atlantis Express. Note though - if you book this way you pay $25 to cancel, so be sure of your reservation (you can change it for free)

We arrived a bit worn out on the Friday night around 11pm - the hotel is literally a 3 minute walk from where the skybus drops off so its well located if you're coming from Tullamarine Airport - especially if arriving late and can't face a hotel hunt. We got a room on the 10th (top) floor. From the booking this was an 'executive queen' and it certainly matched the description. It looked very new and was decorated stylishly, in neutrals - immaculate presentation. There is internet point if you need it. All it all it's very business orientated hotel - no-nonsense and no frills. The bed was quite solid, but comfortable. There's an iron and a board in the cupboard along with a spare pillow. You can control the aircon yourself.

When I say 'no frills' it completely lacked the personal touch, and the bits and bobs that make tourists like me go all squealy, however if you're aiming at business people this approach is absolutley fine. There were two towels provided, with face flannels and a bath mat. I've never stayed anywhere where you get less than two towels per person, but you can ask at reception for more. You get two small soaps and a shampoo/conditioner and a box of tissues. (again, they'll provide other toiletries if you ask). The hairdryer isn't great but its adequate. The shower is large and walk- in but feels a bit pointlessly big - there was plenty room for a bath and the jet from the shower was purely average. The bathroom itself is fully tiled and immaculate. I expected towel rails - there's one hook on the back of the door but I hung my clothes on that so I just slung my towel in the sink whilst showering. I also expected one of those retracting clothes dryers ( I call them garrottes!) but there was nowhere to hang my smalls.

Drinks facilities were basic - milk, sugar, tea, coffee - but there's a fridge if you require it. The drinks area was a bit odd - a large vanity mirror on the back as if it was meant for grooming, but no light meant you couldn't use it for that purpose (too far from the window for natural light)

The hotel doesn't do room service but they provide a home delivery booklet from other restaurants where you can order direct to your room.

Breakfast again is basic - this is not a place with a kitchen. 5 types of cereal, and some bowl fruit. Raisin, white or wholemeal bread for toasting with a few jams and butter. Its $8 if not included in your booking. As its on the 4th floor, you get quite a good view whilst you're eating.

I found the staff to be helpful at all times. Car parking is $12.50 per night and there's an internet machine in the foyer plus plenty of tourist literature. They have a coffee bar but it didn't ever seem to be open. I imagine if you asked at reception someone would pop over and make you a coffee though.

The location is excellent. You can get a tram close by (the st Kilda tram runs down the road and around the corner on bourke st as do city trams) Its still close enough to the centre to be able to walk back on a night if you want to. There are hidden bars dotted around the place. We liked bar humbug which was close to the hotel. The hotel is also close to the car hire firms.

In summary, 4 star - definitely, however geared to the business traveller with no home comforts - if you want quaint or quirky don't stay here. If you want clean, central efficiency then this is for you. Check out is before 10am.

Good value

from Bluebird88
We stayed at this hotel for six nights in mid March. The room was as clean, modern and comfortable as previous posters stated. This hotel's got its own website (atlantishotel) which offers better deals on certain days of the week than the Best Western Groups one. We booked directly via the former website and got a good deal of AU$ 90 nett per night inclusive of breakfast. If we had booked through the latter website, we would have paid AU$140 per night for room only.

Highly recommend

All i can say is wow for this hotel.

Being 21 on a student budget i really feel i lucked out on this hotel.

Got a Deal on the internet for 3 nights at 92$US/night and the 4th night free.

The room was very nice sized, including couch/nice tv/ big fridge/ heater/ac/ desk/ ethernet connection etc. The Bed was queen , so it was comforotable and spacious only complaint was pillows were a little flat. Very clean.Very quiet. Couldnt hear the neighbors ever except maybe the bathroom upstairs when it was late at night. The hotel position is good, being on the edge of the CBD. Trams were accessable basically right outside of the hotel, i would advise Learning the Tram system asap upon arrival. The bathroom was a pretty comfortable size, clean. The staff was helpful at picking out cheap/nice tours of melbourne sites.

The SkyBus, which is a bus that travels between its station and the airport and vice versa. Its' located 2 blocks from the hotel. 13.50AUS one way to the airport per person. So dont let a cabby talking their way into charging you more.

We visited this hotel during the Australian Open and paid about $125AUD. Given the rate at this time of year, the hotel was a pretty decent deal. Only problem I would have was that we were given a smoking room when we requested a non-smoking room. And because we were so tired by the time we arrived (and the hotel was pretty much booked solid), we didn't bother pushing for a non-smoking room. The hotel is definitely not in the most scenic of areas and is quite a long walking distance to the city centre, but it's close to a tram stop where you can take either the 70 into the CBD or the City Circle Tram. Would consider coming back, depending on the price.

Very Modern, Convenient for Transport

from A TripAdvisor Member
This is a clean, modern hotel with well-presented but plainly furnished rooms. Everything in this hotel feels like it is brand new, very nice. Our room had good views over the building work at Spencer Station station but no noise.

The restaurant had nice views out over the Telstra stadium, which was quite nice when having breakfast. Breakfast is basic - toast and cereal. Eveything was well stocked but they could do with an extra toaster at busy times.

The hotel is about 10 minutes walk from Spencer Street Station and is just across the road from the airport bus terminus. You can also get a tram at the traffic lights a couple of 100 yards away, this will take you to Flinders Street Station. Alternatively you can walk to the main shopping streets or the casino in about 25 minutes. There is quite a lot of building redevelopment work around here so its not a particularly scenic walk and quite desolate in the evening. However if you can get a rate below 100 dollars then it is definitely excellent value and there are trams about every 5 minutes to get you into the centre of things.

My only complaint about this hotel would be the lack of curtains in the rooms. There are venetian blinds but they don't do as good as job as curtains. If you are a light sleeper make sure you bring a sleep mask.

Great Place to Stay

Stayed at this hotel last month.

Good Location, Nice rooms and excellent value for money.

The room I stayed in had a lovely view.

The staff were great and gave me lots of good tips of where to go and what to see.

Guy @ the front desk recommended some great little places to eat.

Would stay here again, very handy to Spencer Street Station.

Still In Love with the Atlantis

Stayed at the Atlantis Hotel on a recent trip to Melbourne and found it to be both comfortable and well located. The Staff were friendly and helpfull and gave us excellent directions to local attractions. The Price is reasonable we paid $135 AUD and the rooms all have some views of the city, even though they have been a little blocked by a new building a few doors down....but still could see the city and the Docklands.Very easy access to the Airport with the Skybus terminal 100 mtrs away.
