A Surprise Visit

After Shen's disappointing attempt at surfing Thursday morning, we decided to head to Cabrera, a relatively small town not far from Playa Grande. Through my work with HSI, I know an English woman who lives there and runs Animal Balance, an NGO that brings veterinary services to island dogs around the world. She does tremendous work, and her impact was quite apparent in Playa Grande, where the dogs are friendly, well-fed, and free of the myriad diseases ...

Fancy-Pants on the Cheap

Our good luck with the guaguas continued, or maybe they're just good here. Our trek to Rio San Juan required four buses, and we weren't really sure of the route, but we made it quickly and with no complications. We headed straight for a hotel listed in the guidebook that sounded great, but we had heard different prices from different people. When we walked in, we both said, Oh no, this doesn't look like a place ...

Happy Easter!

... lots of energy, to say the least. I would like to propose a couple of projects to get it going in a more productive direction though sometimes! 3) My Brigada Verde (environment youth group) has become more motivated since returned from the regional conference last weekend. The Yaritza, Massiel and Ileidy, the three girls who attended the conference, gave a charla (presentation) during our ...

First trip to the beach - Samaná Peninsula

... all sensitive to motion sickness. We saw a pair of whales spout & dive several times, so that was neat. Saturday night was so much fun for me because we found some live music at a bar that was playing merengue and bachata. I got to do a lot of dancing, including one song with the ensemble's lead singer...who was highly impressed by my bachata skills. Not so cool were the several pairings of old ...

The COS conference

... fare. I can mop a floor like no other and conserve water like it´s the last drop. Blackouts don´t bother me at all and neither does the loudest blaring music you can muster. So with that said, and with two months to go, I would like to prepare you all as much as myself for my return home. Thank you too all of you who have been so supportive over my two years. But don´t stop reading my blog yet, becuase I have two months and a few more chapters to go!

Relaxing on the Atlantic Coast

... much for tobacco. We spoke in Spanish, and although I had been passing myself off as Canadian/Colombian since the Virginia Tech shooting a few days ago due to the barrage of questions and criticisms aimed at me for the latest example of terror learned and applied by the citizenry as a viable problem solving method justified by the conduct of the state, I confessed my nationality as we spoke of Cuban cigars and the embargo on the island, among ...

Basketball Tournament

... is quite typical of Peace Corps events. You plan, plan, plan. The nothing goes according to these plans. And then everyone agrees things were successful. It's ironic but satisfying. This past week has been pretty relaxed as we have been wrapping up things here in Nagua. We return to Santo Domingo tomorrow (Nov. 5) and then head out to our actual service sites on Nov. 27 which is very exciting. I think everyone is ready to finish training and ...

In the Midst of the Christmas Season

... in a hotel called "Hotel Colonial" (290 pesos for 2). We met some fellow volunteers and chatted for a while. The next morning two other volunteers and I headed out at 9 in the morning to catch a carribe tours bus up to Sosua for 66 pesos. From there we took a taxi to Cabarete for about 65 pesos a piece. The reason I telling you all this is in case you ever wanted to visit you have come idea of what things cost. The place I stayed at the first night(31st of Jan), I do not ...
