Met up with the bunch of raucous Brits who would be my great company for the next 2 weeks and blast any sense of homesickness away! Met in Bangkok at the airport - had a beer waiting for me at the airport bar. My first thought was "so its going to be that kind of a holiday!" Well it was and it wasn't - had loads of fun in the bars and dancing away but I feel we got a fair amount of culture in - what with riding on bikes across Samui's landscape and stopping off in the old Chinese influenced t...
Bangkok/The Islands, Thailand beabeaI was awoken at 7:15 am to finish packing have a piece of bread and then off the airport. After checking in I went to the loung, one of the perks of first class, it was great. I had some strong coffee (3 cups) and cereal and bread, phoned the family - Ginny where were you????, and did some internetting. Then on to the plane for 5 hours and now I am in Bangkok, so far so good, although I havn't gone anywhere. I am staying at the Atlanta Hotel, it came recomeded from a reliable source but I sti...
Bangkok, Thailand bethjWell, still in Bangkok. Yesterday was pretty uneventful so I didn't feel the need to write. I went back to kho san and did some shopping, two pairs of 3/4 length wrap pants and a pair 3/4 length fishermans pants. Better start thinking of what you want me to bring back, I will be doing some heavy duty shopping my last few days in december. I also bought a second hand Myanmar lonley planet and a copy of the book I lost on the train. I picked up my visa for myanmar and then tried to find the Vie...
Bangkok, Thailand bethjArriving in Thailand after three months of travelling in India and Nepal was fantastic. For those who have never been to Bangkok, it is a hugely busy and polluted place but the bright lights and frenetic atmosphere make it very exciting. It provided an opportunity for shopping and even some pampering at the hairdresser. We booked ourselves into the Atlanta Hotel Click here to jump to an article about the Atlanta Hotel where David had stayed before on one of his previous trips to South East As...
Bangkok, Thailand dandjSawadee-khrap - that's hello, good morning, good evening and good-bye in Thai, and I should mention the 'r' is silent if anyone was offended. Our first visit to Thailand, and it's straight into the murky deep end that is metrosexual Bangkok. 27/12/03 After a three hour flight through the night, we landed at 6am local time, and after waiting a while behind the queues of hippies and forty year-old divorcees at immigration control we got a taxi outside and 30 minutes later we were at the quirkil...
Bangkok, Thailand escapetheraceArriving in Bangkok yesterday, without Erika, I was suffering from a little withdrawal. It's different to travel on ones own - not bad but different - sometimes better. I draw a lot of comparisons between traveling in India and in Thailand. Not that they were alike really at all...but they were both backpacking in Asia. In India I was on my own for three months and being on my own I wrote in my journal profusely, met new people and developed intense friendships. Traveling with someone else I ...
Bangkok, Thailand genki-driftersThailand. A new language, a new currency, an entirely new set of cultural norms. The shock of Bangkok was wonderfully calming, after the madness of Indonesia, and I have a newfound appreciation for proper street signs, comprehensible public transportation, and a clean hotel room. I'm staying at the Atlanta Hotel in downtown Bangkok, and the place is directly out of a 1920s speakeasy, with plush red leather, art deco on all the walls, one of those old telephone switchboards, and signs in every...
Bangkok, Thailand jaeleliAfter our first two intensive weeks of travel in Japan and Hong Kong, we were feeling a little burned out when we arrived in Bangkok on the 25th. Lucky for us, Bangkok is a city where you can pretty much do whatever you want to do -- you can hit the tourist trail, laze by the pool or just hide out in your air conditioned hotel room with a good book. We've been staying at a very quirky guesthouse -- The Atlanta hotel in the Sukhumvit area of Bangkok. Our $16 a night hotel room is very simple b...
Bangkok, Thailand kristymattFor the special foodie request, here it is: a whole entry dedicated to the delicious, disgusting, peculiar, and delectable food experiences of our traveling. If you don't feel like hearing long-winded blabber about chili peppers and noodles, you can skip this entry. In general, the overall quality of our eating experience has been surprisingly good. It has been a rare time to sit down at the table and be served something inedible (actually only once - but we'll get to that later). Most of the...
Sukhothai, Thailand kristymattI stayed at the Atlanta Hotel (a place recommended to me by a few people). It is in the heart of Bangkok… just off Sukhumvit (a business/shopping district) and very near one of the larger sex-trade areas of the city. The thing I love about the hotel is that they have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to the sex-trade and they make no apologies. The room was stark… sadly it reminded me of an S-12 the prison cell I saw in Phnom Penh! The highlights of the hotel are its lobby and...
