The arched ceilings did give the impression of cave-like crypts, but it was never used for that as it turns out. the bartender told us stories about the house (after it was an abbey, it was a house…this building has had many lives in it’s nearly 1000 year history), it’s role in the Jacobite rebellion, and the ghost stories of Dorothy Foster, who it is said is still waiting for her brother to return.

    ... to ignore the GPS and follow the "coast route" signs. A bit of a misnomer as the road is enticingly close to the coast, but not close enough to see anything - fog notwithstanding. We stopped for a late lunch beside the river at Amble, which seems an interesting place to explore - but we had a pending rendezvous with a ship.     ... river in the form a U shape or horseshoe around the Cathedral, Castle and University. I did get a bit lost. The great enjoyment of an old city like Durham is that there are so many tiny streets and alleys to explore. It is all very clean and authentic. Coffee and scones were on the menu.
