UP THE ACROPOLIS HILL

... the morning, wearing light clothes.

It is better not to wear black at all!

There are many tourists who are taking photos on the way, but were also parents carrying their poor children without a hat. I felt sorry for them

The view from up the hill is superb. It is a clear day, and the sky is blue. What more could I need!

... this and that", and I`d go: "yeah I totally agree"; Maja: "you know, I think that this and that", and me: "Seriously? I thought I`m the only one who thinks this way!"; Maja: " `cos you see, you can`t do it when..." "Not possible! Neither can I! Maja, what`s your zodiac sign?" "Pisces" "Oh really, but you`re from March?" "Yeah" "What day?" "The FOURTH" "Nooooooo wayyyyy..." At that time we couldn`t stop laughing. FInally, when we started breathing again, Maja said: "Well ...

History Lesson Part 1

... expect. Winding up the path past facades of arches and ancient theatres, including the still used Theatre of Dionysis, you reach the entrance gate known as the Propylaea. Beyond the gate is the main event, the Parthenon. Besides most of the surviving sculptures being in the British Museum, the Parthenon is an impressive site. Restoration works also meant that they were several cranes poking out of the temple, and scaffolding ...

a greek odyssey

... in the group of islands known as the 'Cyclades', where island names like Santorini, Mykonos and Ios, conjure images of golden sandy beaches, villages of white and blue trimmed houses, and long party nights. With every idea that was given voice, given life, my excitement became palpable. One idea that was hatched and nurtured was the possibility of renting a car. With the amount of luggage we were carrying, the embarking and disembarking of ferries, coupled with the size of some of ...

Athens and Santorini

... we moved to the Agora (means marketplace or gathering place). Here the people of the day gathered for buying, for worship, for court and more. It was truly the center of their lives. Inside the Agora is located the oldest temple in Greece. It is in remarkably good condition. As we walked between the Acropolis and the Agora we followed a cobblestone path that dates from the time of Christ. It doesn't make for a remarkable photo but it's pretty amazing to think it still ...

Athina - City of Ancients

... I wasn't entirely blown away by it (although this could be due in part to the fact that so many famous Greek artifacts are being kept by rival museums in other countries!) but Nick and I did enjoy it and as ever found ways to have fun with it. There was a very extensive sculpture exhibition, and Nick's favourite, the Vase collection (a collection of hundreds of ancient vases - I found them interesting, Nick differed in ...

Life on the Rocks

... The captain was arrested and jailed for negligence, which may be escalated to manslaughter. It took 3.5hrs to evacuate the 1487 guests but we had a great group and made it fun to help fend off anxiety. We made crepe paper headbands to identify our team, took heaps of pics, filled them with false assurance to pacify hysterics, sang the baby elephant walk as we marched single file to gangway, made our own rave with the lights and whistles on our life jackets, ogled the hot ...

Old Stuff Part II

... signs in every direction pointing towards the Acropolis. We got our first glimpse of it through this little city nestled beneath it, and I looked forward to the next day when we would go and see it up close. We walked through the Roman Agora at the end of our tour, and picked up our tickets to the Acropolis for the following day. After the three hour orientation walk, we had our first taste of Greek food, Chad drank Ouzo, and we called it a night. The next day, we headed straight ...

Those Protestors Aren't Mad At You. Go On Ahead!

... to praise its appearance, I didn’t find it quite that impressive. Outside of the temple itself, there isn’t much in the way of other ruins to explore. Still, its beautiful setting does make it worth visiting. So, if one has a little time in the itinerary and is getting stir crazy looking at the concrete boxes of Athens, then Sounion should be visited. The visitor will get a better appreciation for the tremendous natural beauty that Greece possesses.
