I really enjoyed the relaxed and welcoming attitudes of the people we met in Greece. Besides the traffic patterns, Athens was a very manageable city and when we pulled out our map people would stop to help us figure out where we should be heading. While I really enjoyed all of the history of Athens, my favorite day in Greece was going to the nearby island of Hydra.

We had some trouble getting into Athens. Our flight out of Paris had a layover in Frankfurt. We were delayed for 8 hours because the ILS was not working. Awful Service, Average Hotel

When I arrived at the hotel, they informed me that they had overbooked, and that they had transferred my reservation to another hotel. Normally, this wouldn't be that big of a deal, except that my wife was arriving in Athens separately from me at 4:00 a.m. the following morning and was going to meet me at the hotel. She was already on her flight, so there was no way that I could get hold of her to let her know about the hotel change. I explained all of this to the Ledra Marriott, but they said that they still couldn't give me a room there. So I had to go to the hotel that they booked me at several miles away, then get up at 4:00 a.m. to meet my wife in the lobby of the Ledra Marriott to take her back to the other hotel. Then they would only pay for one night at the other hotel, and wanted me to come all the way back across town later that morning to check into the Marriott. That was the only day that we were going to have to sightsee in Athens, and I wasn't about to waste it changing back to a hotel across town, especially when I had to get up a 4:00 a.m. because of their original screw-up. I ended up just eating the hotel room at the Marriott, but I was already booked to stay there again two weeks later when we got back from a few of the Greek Isles. Our second stay there was less eventfull, but the hotel was still very underwhelming. The Athens Hilton is MUCH, MUCH nicer.
Great base for Athens

We wanted a comfortable hotel that was centrally located, had large enough rooms for 2 adults and 2 children and had a swimming pool. The Marriott gave us all of these and a very enjoyable stay to boot. The rooms were large, spacious and well furnished and decorated. The air conditioning was a blissful relief to return to. The swimming pool is on the roof with wonderful Acropolis views and there is also a very good snack bar and bar up there. Great for lunch and for evening drinks with that view. It was hard to believe you were in the centre of town with a busy road somewhere below you.
It is hard to find this combination at a decent price in Athens. There are plenty of small cheap hotels but they don't have a pool. There are other very expensive hotels that do, but they are EXPENSIVE. This was great and we would definitely return. Have read the comments about location. Its not right in the centre where you can walk to the Acropolis or the Plaka area. No. But we got cabs (10 dollars) and had no problems going in and out for dinner and tourist things. I wouldn't be put off by that. It was nothing and the bliss of coming back to a lovely open air swim after pounding the pavements was priceless. There is a jacuzzi too. One night we ate in at the Pacific Rim/Japanese restaurant and found it very good if a bit pricey.

My husband and I stayed at the Ledra Marriott for 7 nights. This hotel exceeded our expectations. It was immaculate, well decorated, and very comfortable. Guest Services were helpful and accomodating and the remote location meant fewer traffic and pollution in the area.
We covered a lot of ground while staying here and chose to walk to many sites. Being young and physically fit this was not a challenge for us, but for families with younger children or couples wanting a more 'relaxed' vacation a taxi would be a must when visiting the sites.
There are many available sightseeing tours that can be booked from Guest Services. The location of this hotel meant we were usually the first and last ones dropped off after tours. As far as meals, we did not dine at the hotel since our budget didn't permit it, but there was a lovely restaurant a few blocks away with outdoor seating and the best Greek food I've ever had. We ordered almost everything the waitor recommended, and the bill came to less than $35 for the two of us!
The highlight of this hotel is the beautiful rooftop pool that has a spectacular view of the distant Parthenon...absolutely stunning. I would recommend this hotel to anyone, but again keep in mind the distance to the main attractions in Athens and the possibility of a higher transportation budget due to communtes.

Nice hotel...but too far

We just returned yesterday from Athens. My family (wife+2kids) stayed at the Marriot Ledra for 3 nights. There are some pros & cons of this property. Advantages- 1) Great service- there is always a smile on the faces of the staff 2) nice rooms - comfortable, big, well kept and clean 3) Extremely flexible - on 2 occasions I asked them to provide us with breakfast early in the morning (at 0600 hrs when leaving for Mykonos and 0500hrs when leaving back for India) and they did just that. They provided us with the best that they could (juices, yoghurt, ham & cheese sandwiches) in neatly packed boxes. Again without a frown! DISADVANTAGES - 1) Like someone was mentioning, they do not advertise their shuttle service and even if they do, the last bus is at 1900 hrs and that leaves you fending for taxis. Athens is a land full of opportunists (especially the taxi drivers). While going we used to get a taxi from the hotel and pay 4-5Euros as suggested by the hotel but when returning with shopping bags in your hands and tired kids and feet, these guys just fleece you. While they have fare metres, not a single taxi charged us by that and quoted fares for a 10 minute drive starting from Euro 10 to Euro 25. Ridiculous! 2) The hotel is situated in a shady locality surrounded by sex and sleaze shops. Even when you have to get to the property, you have to wade through tons and tons of residential lanes (filled with garbage on the roads and dust and pollution everywhere).
Overall, while I would suggest Marriot for business stay, I would definitely not recommend it for families vacationing in Athens. And as it is, I did not find Athens comparable with any European country I have been to. Its full of dirt, dust, constructions going on everywhere, cheating cabbies, haphazard town planning. Besides Acropolis, Plaka and the gorgeous Mykonos, there is nothing to see here.
Overall, while I would suggest Marriot for business stay, I would definitely not recommend it for families vacationing in Athens. And as it is, I did not find Athens comparable with any European country I have been to. Its full of dirt, dust, constructions going on everywhere, cheating cabbies, haphazard town planning. We just came from a 4-day trip to Athens. We stayed at Ledra for 3 nights. I can still visualize the illuminated view of Acropolis. We usually stay in the intercontinental group hotels. After reading the comments in this site we decided to try Ledra. Through Chase travel rewards, we booked this hotel for a family of 4. We had very comfortable stay and great breakfast buffet. Usually, it is hard to wake up kids in the morning while we are on vacation. My kids loved the hotel and the breakfast. Beds are very comfortable. Clean rooms. Staff is very courteous and helpful. Next time when we stay in Marriot we decided to keep at least one day free to enjoy the hotel. We went to Acropolis and city tour one half day and the next day went to Mycenae, Epidurus. Both days we took a private taxi. The driver was very nice, reasonably knowledgeable. Arranged by the concierge at the hotel. Third day we took the one-day cruise. I would highly recommend this hotel.
Great Place To Stay

What wonderful people at the hotel. It didn't matter whether you paid full price for a room or got at a discount as we did. They treated everyone the same. The room was throughly cleaned each day and the service was great through out hotel. The Euro dollar takes a bite out of your US dollar but we found that exchange rates at hotels were better than the banks. The work is still being completed for the 2004 games to be held there but only a few places closed to public. City transportation was easy to use and navigate where you wanted to go.
Food was great and there were several places within walking distance for a change of menu. Go,enjoy and experience the wonders there.

Nice amenities, but some drawbacks

My wife and I stayed at the Ledra for 2 nights in September of 2003.
While not in the most desirable location, the hotel did have some nice amenities. The rooftop pool is was extremely nice, with a view of the acropolis (far in the distance), and a nice bar on top as well. The rooms were big and comfortable, as you'd expect from a $225/night hotel. The only downfall is that it is not walking distance to any of the tourist attractions (Plaka, Acropolis), and cabs seemed difficult to nail down. Hotel restaurants were overpriced, considering there is a nice little taverna 1 block down the street. The only reason I stayed here was to utilize 2 free nights I had from Marriott. Personally, I would spend the $450 on a nicer hotel later on your trip.

This hotel is quite lovely. I was in what I believe was a renovated room so I don't know if this means there are still unrenovated rooms.
Either way, my room was great- very spacious, balcony with view of Acropolis, super comfortable bed, tv sound in the bathroom! Staff was friendly and attentive. Rooftop pool was nice (often crowded) and the bar/restaurant up there is a great place to get a drink. As others have reported, the location is definitely a challenge. Location is only drawback

The Athens Marriott is a great place, the only drawback being that it is not within walking distance to anything. To get to the city, you have to take a taxi, which is VERY EXPENSIVE, for a ten or fifteen minute ride, I think around $7 one way. The hotel doesn't tell people, but they DO have a free shuttle to downtown, only during the day, which was VERY convenient... but you'll want to do sightseeing during the day, come back to the hotel for a rest.... if you want to go back to Athens at night for dinner, like in the Plaka area, you have to deal with taxis... The room was beautiful and very spacious. The bed was VERY comfortable. Food was expensive in the restaurants, but the rooftop pool was great, and had a nice restaurant up there too, open until very late at night, I think 1 AM. I recommend the hotel if you'll be in Athens 3 or more days; for shorter stays, stay closer to downtown areas... but be prepared to pay even HIGHER prices!
An Excellent Hotel

The Athens Ledra Marriott is a wonderful experience! The rates are very reasonable for the quality that is displayed and experienced. The beds are very comfortable and the restaurants are extraordinary! Most rooms have views from the balconies of the Parthenon. One of my favorite amenities to this fabulous hotel is the roof top pool and bar with one of the most amazing views of the Acropolis in the city!
