The Acropolis and more...

Today we explored the Acropolis and surrounding areas, most of which are ancient ruins. We paid 12 Euro for 7 sites but ditched out on 3 of them because, frankly, it all began to look the same. You can only see so many marble columns and such. That being said, the Acropolis and Theater of Dionysus were quite amazing. The theater is where the Greek tragedies and comedies by Plato and Socrates were originally performed. It has remained in pretty good shape after all these years. Getting to the ...

Our first day in Greece

Arrived in Athens early this morning and no wildfires to be seen….they have extinguished them all. After a 30-minute bus ride from the airport (only 3 Euro each) we were in the city center and at our hotel…The Athens Gate.

We walked around the streets around our hotel to get our bearings, sat at an open-air café and sampled a Greek plate with spanikopita, dolmades, fried feta cheese, meatballs and more good stuff. Of course, we had the local drink Ouzo – pretty inexpe...

Arrival

Hi Everyone,

We made it to Athens!

We left Sacramento at 8:30 AM Sunday on route to Philadelphia. During the flight I took out my new Acer netbook computer, and I thought I put it back in my backpack when I was done. When we got to Philadelphia we had about an hour to get to the next gate in the international terminal for our flight to Rome. We made it and had just enough time to grab a sandwich before boarding the plane. After everyone was on the plane they announced they were ...

Stairs from Hell

We were planning to go to the Acropolis today. You are advised to go there as early as possible
to beat the heat and large crowds from cruise ship tours. I had the alarm on my phone set for 7am. I turned it off and woke back up about 8:30. By the time we'd gotten ready and eaten breakfast at the hotel we decided to postpone the Acropolis until tomorrow.

Instead we went to the National Archaeological museum. It is a very large museum which contains artifacts that have been discovere...

Our Day in Ruins

This morning we got up early to try to go to the Acropolis before it got too hot and it got crowded. Not quite early enough. The weather was fine because there was a breeze but there were already lots of people from tour groups from cruise ships at the top. We entered the grounds at the Theater of Dionysus and walked up a path to the top of the hill where the Parthenon is. Really spectacular.
The pictures don't do it justice. You have to see it for yourself. We walked down the other side a...

Athens - Lauren's new favorite city

Although it would have been nice to spend a little more time in Mykonos, I'm not sure our creditcards would allow it. We took a high speed ferry back to Athens. The cab scene at the port in Athens is pretty hectic and confusing. With about 30 drivers trying to get you in their car, it seems like something bad is about to happen....right as we were about to step into one cab, a police car pulled up behind what looked like the cab stand....apparently not because every driver literally sprinted ...

It's All Greek To Me

Another early morning as we had to catch the ferry back to the Greek mainland before our long drive to Athens. Patrick was sound asleep with his headphones on. How the heck was he going to wake up if he hadn't slept in my room. He would have slept right through his alarm and missed the bus. It wouldn't have been a first for him. It was a chore in itself to wake him up but I eventually succeeded. We went down to have one last amazing breakfast at this hotel before leaving to catch the ferry. ...

All Good Things Must Come To An End

The final day of the tour has arrived. As with everything in life, all good things must come to an end. Those of us who were staying at this hotel one more night had to remove their things from the room only to be reassigned another room later this afternoon. Thankfully, we were able to store our things in a locked room behind the reception desk until then. After breakfast, we boarded the coach one last time for our drive to visit the Acropolis. Once at the foot of the Acropolis, it was a re...

Geia sas from Athens!

Well, here we are in the birthplace of Western Civilization - and it's wonderful! Athens is huge and sprawling, but feels easy to get around with lots of different neighborhoods to exlore. Last night we stopped in at a taverna for dinner, for a "lowly" taverna dinner it rivaled any we've had in the past weeks of travelling.... we are so glad to be here! This morning we got up early and arrived at the Acroplis for the opening, we successfully missed the crowds and got some amazing pictures of ...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Athens Gate Hotel

Great "New" Hotel

from David49b
Athens is a large, busy city that can be confusing or intimidating to those who haven't visited it before. The solution? Stay at a great hotel, where personal service is the hallmark.

The Athens Gate Hotel has got everything (well, almost everything) going for it! The location is superb for sightseeing and public transportation. The hotel itself has been totally renovated, from the ground up, in a sleek, sexy and very comfortable fashion. (The owners are in the textile business and from what they did w/the Athens Gate, they obviously have exquisite taste.)

From the moment you walk into the hotel, your greeting is warm and welcoming! And, it only gets better, the longer you stay. Everyone, from the Front Desk people to the Lobby Bar man was personable and professional. You would be lucky if you had Michael, at the Front Desk ck you-in. He was welcoming, helpful and genuinely warm. I had a drink downstairs in the Lobby (while using the Internet) and John, the Lobby Bar guy, could not have been nicer or more pleasant.

The rooms are elegant and cool, with polished wood floors and gorgeous double curtains (including a black-out one.) The bathroom is large (for Athens or most European cities) beautifully done-up in simple, yet elegant marble-like tile and wood accents. The shower was powerful, the towels were pure cotton-- big, thick and terrific!

Best of all, get a room over-looking the Temple of Zeus, which is magnificently flood-lit at night. There are floor to ceiling windows & a door to the terrace outside. Even if you don't go outside (there are no chairs or tables on the terraces) the view is gorgeous. There is hardly any street noise, due to heavy insulation and double-pane glass.

Lastly, the breakfast, served daily on the Roof Garden, is not only delcioius and lavish (yes, freshly squeezed orange juice, too!) but you have one of Athen's quintessential views: the Parthenon and the Acropolis on one side and the Temple of Zeus and Hadrian's Arch on the other.

The owners of The Athens Gate have not only attended to the details of organizing & running a hotel, but they obviously want their guests to feel welcomed and "at home." This is a rare combination today, except in a very select few super-deluxe hotels. It's a delight to find such courtesies and warmth in a small, new hotel. I highly recommend a stay here!

Ein groaßartiges Hotel!

from Maroula

Super adresse !

Athens Gate Hotel Superb!!!

from NorthernOntarians
Well-travelled Canadians from Sudbury, Ontario. The Athens Gate Hotel

was superb!!! We loved it!

SERVICE: Our stay began with a warm welcome from staff and throughout

our five day stay we were provided with the most superior service from management and staff. Better than 5 Star service. From the front

desk clerk to the manager, all were welcoming, friendly, polite and generous with their time. All requests were addressed immediately. We

forgot how to open our safe and help arrived within 5 minutes.

HOTEL FACILITY: The entire hotel had just been totally renovated and the modern rooms, bathrooms, and entire facility, were IMMACULATE. Crisp white linens dressed the comfy beds and each time we returned from our jaunts about Athens, our room had been freshened up.

LOCATION: Spectacular! Overlooking Hadrian's Gate & the Temple of Zeus, mere steps from the Acropolis and the Plaka. Walking distance to the Stadium, Flea Market, Parliament and shopping district and the

metro just outside the rear of the hotel. In the Roof Garden Restaurant we enjoyed sumptuous breakfasts, with unlimited fresh squeezed orange juice, beautifully served by the most attentive staff, while gazing up at the Acropolis and the Parthenon framed by a

clear brilliant blue sky.

The cleanliness, convenient location, service, friendliness of staff made our stay in Athens even more special. We felt very much at home.

We would HIGHLY RECOMMEND The Athens Gate Hotel to anyone visiting Athens. SUPERIOR VALUE FOR YOUR MONEY!

Das Athens Gate Hotel ist spitze!!!

from NorthernOntarians

from sharpei69

Re-Done and Well Done

from MaribethNewYork
The Hotel Recently has had a major overhaul and face-lift. The staff is especially courteous, friendly and helpful. Stavro particularly should be commended as he gave the place the feel of staying at a friend's as opposed to a hotel. The location is prime, only steps away from Plaka and the Acropolis and accross the street from the Temple of Zeus.

The rooms are comfortable and clean, having been recently re-done. I found the decor tastful, a bit 60's retro with definite greek influences. My room had an excellent view of the temple of Zues and Lecabetus. No restaurant as of yet as the Rooftop Garden is being renovated. Breakfast was complementary and very well done.

Wold highly recommend for those who want a convenient location, reliable service and an impeccable environment, whether in Athens for buisness or tourism.
