Week 12 - Greece Part 1

GFC. I'm no economist, that’s for sure. Not even close. I mildly loathe numbers and statistics. However, having not lived under a rock for the last 5 years of my life, I do have a (very slight) grasp on the whole Global Financial Crisis commotion. Well, Greece was the first place that my eyes were able to witness the devastation of economic …

Athens, not a nice place this time of decade

Fly Baboo is actually a decent airline and the only one to fly Nice-Athens direct; unfortunately it just has a dumb name that made me feel I was going to crash. I arrived into Athens at 2pm but did not get to the hotel until 430pm...that is how far out of town the airport is and how long it took to get luggage and for the bus to get to the main …

The airport to metro went smoothly enough. However I was a little flustered trying to find my hotel once I got to Omonia station. The square seemed reminiscent of Florence for some reason. Chaos perhaps?
I had no idea where I was going and english is definitely not widely spoken here as it is in central Europe and I guess Greek being over 2000 …

very risky area with drug dealers, shooting up and muggings in broad daylight. i would not recommend anyone stay here. the unfortunate thing is that the hotel is great.

    Good Service

    from

We stayed at the Grand Athena for 4 nights from the 26th August. The room was clean and tidy and spacious. The bathroom was always maintained in an excellent condition. The hotel is located in a good area, central to most of the city attractions. The hotel staff provided an excellent level of service. The staff at the reception desk were very helpful in all aspects. The bellboys were also extremely helpful, always watching when you enter and leave and assisting wherever possible. The breakfast was very nice. The kitchen was under construction so we were not able have dinner there, however that was not a problem as the hotel is in a good location.

    Encantador y hermoso hotel

    from

    from

    Charming and beautiful hotel

    from

I spent 3 nights at the Athena Grand and loved my stay. The lobby was beautiful and the staff was friendly. Great internet access and cool lobby bar. I stayed on the 5th floor and loved the painted walls...felt I was someplace special. Bathroom was huge and clean, products were a nice touch and I loved the radio/cd player in the room. Very hip decor and comfty beds. Close to metro and safe neighborhood. However, do not order room service as kitchen was under renovation and my order was messed up! It was a nice oasis after a busy day in Athens.

    Friendly People

    from

We just got back from Greece and had a good stay at the Athena Grand.

I reccomend the very top floor. The rooms at the top have huge patios with a great view.

The staff were all nice. Breakfast was good.

    Great Hotel

    from

We stayed here for one night at the end of a sailing holiday so it was a bit of welcome luxery after being cooped up on a boat!! We paid €150/ night which was pretty steep, however we got upgraded to a buisness suite. The staff were fantastic, very attentive and friendly. The room was very comfortable and sylish (but not worth the €700/ night it usually costs), and the breakfast was great, everthing you could imagine. It is very well located, within easy access of all the main attraction and the underground. A very welcome respite to the hustle and bustle of Athens.

Only slight critisism would be that the room had obviously been used by a smoker so the room had an odour of stale smoke.

Very nice hotel, but I was expecting a lot more

    from

We stayed in the hotel for 2 nights in December.

The hotel is very centrally located and next to the city hall.

The decoration was luxirious, and the reception/bar was really nice. The staff was very helpfull and kind.

The room was spotless and the furniture very nice but, it was quite small. The bathroom was also quite small . For the amount of money paid we were a bit let down by the size of the room. We had a lovely large balcony though.

The breakfast was excellent but very pricey (we paid extra).

One other thing we noticed is that the two elevators were tiny.

All in all it is a very nice hotel, in a very nice location but for that amount of money we expected more.

    Luxurious but stupidly designed

    from

This is one of the most beautiful & luxurious hotels I've ever seen, but also probably the most stupidly designed. There was really no place to put one's things down. Plexiglass tables beside the bed had no drawers or additional shelf. A plexiglass cube with colored lights inside couldn't be shut off. The bath-room had only 2 small shelves. Silliest of all was the shower: Turn it on, check water temperature - open shower door to do this, but then water cascades onto the floor. The only towel that wasn't sopping up water was the one I dried myself with. The staff was extremely nice & helpful, giving me a box lunch when I left very early for my plane, but I advised that they spend a night in that room, bringing with them the clothing they might have for a week's trip. Maybe then they could appreciate what staying there is really like.

    Good Central hotel

    from

Just returned from a 3 night stay at the Grecotel Athena Grand and, very happy with our choice. Hotel is in an ideal location, just a couple of minutes walk from Omonia square. On our arrival, not knowing the hotel was closer to Omonia, we walked from the metro at Monistiraki and it took about 10 minutes at the most. Our room though not the biggest that we have stayed in was comfortable and clean, all that you want from a hotel really. Bathroom was quite large, we had a room overlooking the side street with a view of some derelict offices! but it did not bother us, so maybe ask for a room at the front if you can. Staff were very friendly, my only grumble was that there could have been more wardrobe space. It was an easy walk to Plaka, Syntagma so an excellent location. With the fish & meat markets just a few minutes walk away, you really are at the heart of city life. There is a bar/restaurant on ground level, open to the street which seemed very popluar with the locals. We only had a drink which was not the cheapest, but the service was really slow! A good choice and the rate at euro 110, including breakfast was good value. Athens is a great city, something for everyone.

Boutique Hotel in Athens - Athena Grand

    from

This a charming boutique hotel that is approximately a 10 minute walk from the Plaka. It is next to City Hall for reference. The hotel is clean and the service is very friendly. The rooms are small but nicely appointed and reasonably priced.

We stayed in the romance parlor as it was our honeymoon. The room has a nice terrace overlooking the square.

The hotel offers a good buffet breakfast daily and has a nice restaurant on the lower floor.
