One thing I definitely wanted to be sure we did was visit the capital and experience life in an Islamic country away from the tourist resort style setting. My goodness!
I struggle to find the words to
describe what it was like coming from the peace, serenity and beauty of the
atoll to a bustling, compacted, smelly, garbage filled streets of the city. The
moment you step off the dock you are hit with thousands of motorbikes and
miniature vans & small cars whizzing ...

... only to glow when impacted by something. Quite magical to see the entire surf flickering with tiny blue sparkles, mirroring the stars above.

Also, we were awakened at about 4am to the sound of the wind trying to break down our door and come inside! The rain was pouring harder than I have ever seen, and the palm trees were literally bending in the gale. We were reminded that, yes, we are on THE lowest country on the planet. ... so you dont have to even go thru the bungalow in your wet bath suit to jump into the shower. From the bathtub you can gaze out onto the ocean, and because they are built up high on stilts, even the snorkelers swimming by cant take away your privacy. Christine and I are in Heaven, and for the difference in price a night from the comfort bungalow we had booked originally of exactly one hour rate a night of what we make in our airline jobs back home. ... stages of construction, it has a great beach as well, meant for locals, but one kind guy said we as tourists would be allowed on. The major difference was a sign prohibiting the wearing of bikinis (luckily John left his at home ;) all the ladies go into the sea fully clothed, head veils and all!
