Day 4 Rockies Experience

What a busy and amazing day. Up bright and early to drive to the Athabasca Glacier and Columbia Icefields for an icewalk. What an incredible experience, really hard to put into words. The pictures don't really do it justice either. It was such a large expanse of ice, majestic and powerful. The "icefield" are actually layers of snow that eventually become ice at deep levels and the "glaciers" are the run-offs as some of the ice melts and then runs down moutains and reforms freezes. The Columbi...

On tour!

I am clearly a city girl. One snappy tour guide, the threat of bears knocking down your cabin door and NO RUNNING WATER(!) does not make for a good trip! Luckily the sights I saw on this leg of the trip made up for all the above! My companions for the trip were aforementioned tour guide, Tianna, and 10 travellers; Sean, Laughren and Ornia from Ireland, Lana, Luke and Annaliese from Australia Bernard the 60 year old French guy and 2 other randoms I didn't get a chance to chat to. First stop wa...

Love it!! I wana live here

So we left Kamloops and headed to Jasper - saw Mount Robson and the start of the rockies I think. We got to see the top of Mt Robson which apparently is really rare so that was lucky. However, we were a little unlucky that our lunch stop - miles away from anywhere was suffering a power outage so we had to make do with anything we could find in the gift shop - wasn't too bad really. So after lunch we hopped on board ...

Merde on the Transcanadian Express!

... a euphoric splash against rocks. It was absolutely breath-taking. Slightly marred however, by the stench from the two toddlers who had very dirty nappies!!! Change your children's nappies!!! Walking through the compartment where this family were sleeping resulted in a stench of urine and poo! Change Your Children's Nappies!!!!!!! Maybe they couldn't afford a lot of nappies though.... (David: Obviously, they'd spent all their money travelling in the first class carriages then ...

The Great Outdoors...Jasper

Woke up this morning (albeit an hour late as we had forgotten to change our clocks), in Camp Wapiti, Jasper National Park, and found that Jack Frost had paid a visit, BIG TIME. There was a layer of ice completely covering our campervan, even the drops of water had frozen into icecles overnight. We headed out into the wilderness, and we'd been on the road about 15 minutes, and next thing you know, we'd gone from an autumn season with a ...

... thanks to the manipulative Aussies we were with, one of me posed as a travel agent and got us a look around the top rooms, was amazing, Michael had insisted we got photos from the top of the hotel, the views were stunning, the top rooms had outdoor balcony's to take int he views. After stacks of photos, the weather was spot on, we headed back to the bus! The next stop was along the Icefields Parkway, one of the most scenic and subsequently famous stretches of ...

Best wildlife spotting yet

... track and got some good views of the lake before the clouds closed in and it started hailing and sleeting. The best views were not from the old fire watch lookout but from the hiking trail, so we were glad that we had taken the shorter, steeper route with the views, rather than the recommended fire-road, because we would have missed all the best views. Coming down I saw a big brown circular shape and thought "either that is a huge tree stump or a large animal". I saw ...

Jasper - A wildlife wonderland

... piece of railway track in Canada to build. The grades were so steep and dangerous for trains in this area that Canadian Pacific Railway had to build a 13km looping line instead of blasting a 430m tunnel through the mountain to continue the railway. Our first black bear of the trip was encountered just before the Alberta border. It was having a great time eating dandelions. Some twits were out of their cars having a look and were a bit too close for my liking! Entering ...
