Kaye brought her suitcase with her as she was leaving on the Tuesday and with the car being out of action we thought it would be safer for her to be in town in order to catch the train. We chose this place more or less by accident. We had a few days to kill between ending our cruise in Venice and catching a plane in Zurich, and had heard the Italian lakes district is worth seeing. All the reviews pointed to Bellagio – set on a lake, quaint narrow pathways climbing between old houses. But, Bellagio doesn’t have a train station. Enter Varenna. This little town of ...
... the guide provides commentary in Italian for 10 minutes then the condensed English version for 5 minutes. It was very enjoyable none the less. My compensation was having a couple of cold beers sitting out on the balcony watching the world go by and contemplating where we would eat tonight. My feet were saying, why not try the restaurant in the hotel and so we did, not the greatest meal in the world but the view and the atmosphere was unbeatable.

Bellagio's steep hills were crowded with many shops, art studios, outlets and restaurants. We were cold from exploring all morning in the rain, so found a nice cafe inside to eat warm soup and pasta. On ferry back to Varenna we again ran into the American couple who sat near us at dinner last night - wonder if we will see them again tomorrow.
