... maar in 1903 heeft Kreta (toen nog onafhankelijk van Griekenland) het eiland in gebruik genomen als lepracolonie voor 251 patiënten. Er was verpleging en een priester voor de zieken. In 1913, toen Kreta bij Griekenland kwam, werden alle lepralijders van Griekenland naar hier gedeporteerd. De staat moest wel een kleine vergoeding per patiënt betalen maar in hoofdzaak moesten ze voor hun eigen voorzieningen instaan. De laatste patiënt stierf hier in 1957 ...

We found the central tasting room, which did not appear open, and my heart sank a bit until we saw another car that had been parked near by heading towards us. A woman who was one of the tasting room managers had stopped by to check on the property and was happy to show us around and give us a tasting.

We arrived in Crete almost two hours later yesterday due to some incident on the ship where someone fell,jumped, whatever overboard. No worries-- all our chicks were very safely tucked in their cabins! We did have one worry, though, one of our students luggage was filched off the baggage truck. (BIG) Dora the Explorer...
... so we will have to have round two of that.
As we were quite roasted from yesterday and the sun was burning down we stayed indoors for a bit doing admin etc. Our rather large dirty clothes bag came to mind so I asked Big Dora where we might do some laundry. Turns out apparently the closet one is in the town towards the beach and according to Big Dora “Must walk, only 20 minutes, yes yes you fine, go go”. Cool so off we set with the bag on our backs…at least ...

It was then time for round one of Aussie vs Saffa Ping Pong tournament – different code but I still won 2 games to 3!!
More roasting in the sun, a very relaxed arvo, dinner then another early night. All this chilling out really takes it out of you.
Tomorrow we hopefully have another game of tennis, possibly the beach before packing up and moving to our originally intended ...
