Nida & the Hill of Crosses

... town there were no tourists, no people as it was off season. We felt like we had whole town only for us...and the beaches!
There are also interesting places to see nearby, including some of the highest sand dunes in Europe, fisherman's ethnographic museum, gallery-museum of amber, neo-Gothic church (built in 1888).

Klaipeda

... dark at night when walking back, but didnt feel unsafe to me. From the hotel to old town takes around 15 minutes on foot. Most of the way is a shopping street. The old town it self is small and not very exciting, but has some nice restaurants and bars. I had dinner somewhere outside in the city centre, which was very cheap. This being a Sunday evening, it was pretty quiet.

Palanga & 1000 year Lithuanian celebration

I am going to another beach town, Palanga, 30 min North. Micro busses leave frequently. They appear to wait until full which can be 2 minutes or 40 minutes (like to Nida).

This is a total beach resort. It's pedestrian walk even has Carnival type rides, huge cafes, ice cream everywhere … The crowds dwarf Nida. The beach has a volleyball tournament going on. I do my thing which is to walk ...

Nida, a small resort town

... As I walk into the courtyard, I see the restaurant in the back. There are several restaurants which appear to merge. I am apparently sitting in the are of one restaurant but am able to order from the menu of the steak house. Steak was OK. Service was terrible. I think the steak had been sitting out for awhile. In the US, I would send it back but too difficult with the waiter’s limited English.

Meeting the Family

... for its giant sand dunes. We explored historic fisherman neighborhoods in Nida, the central town of the peninsula. In nearby Rusne we saunaed with childhood friends and ate freshly smoked fish. In Klaipeda we got a private tour of the clock museum with Ugne's grandmother. Her cousin took us out for a night on the town to the hip discos. We met up with a few other childhood friends for drinks a local jazz club. I got a healthy dose ...

Spitting is not always rude

... bike there. Take the opportunity of 30 minutes wait for the bus to walk across the spit to the beach on the other side, the spit is to my surprise heavily forested and rises quite steeply in places being as rooted in Sand dunes. The Baltic coast is living up to it's reputation and although it is not too cold 16'C the wind is very strong and the rough seas look too cold to even contemplate a paddle never mind a swim. The beach stretches the entire ...

When In Lithuania

... fairly close by. The owners even came down to pick us up in the convertible. It turned out to be a fantastic place, very posh, with a beautiful kitchen and sun deck downstairs and a proper double bed upstairs (as opposed to two beds pushed together as was the usual). The people were lovely too, which slightly restored our faith in the possibility of pleasant, backpacker friendly Lithuanians, instead of the disproportionate amount of surly, unhelpful, and just plain ...

Bus boy!

... and the lexus in very bad shape, driver still inside crashed out in a field a good 30 meters from the road. Not good. The bus just trekked on though. We arrived at the bus station and found the hostel literally seconds walk away. From the outside it looked old and crumbling, on the inside a totally different story unfolds. The hostel is nice, friendly, cosy, clean, just top quality. We were shown into our rooms by a friendly (a trip first ...
