The ship had docked in the harbour by 7am. We had decided that we would carry our own luggage off the ship - which would save us putting it outside the cabin at midnight last night. They were very efficient at getting us off the ship - but I suppose they would ahve to because they were sailing again at 5pm. I would hate a job like that.

Friend Carol and her daughter Michelle left for Sydney today. Got up early to see them off. Then caught the shuttle bus to the Waikele Outlet Stores. Cost $5 for the return trip. We caught the 9am bus out and I said that I would be back on the 12 noon bus.

I hadn't been going to the Outlet shops until I discovered that Hawaiian Airlines …

Arrived at hotel at 6am and missing three hours (if not more) sleep.

Receptionist was most unhelpful, said check-in time was 12 noon, they could maybe do something by 8am but would charge a fee for early check in. We said OK and sat in the lounge opposite him to make him feel guilty.

The shift changed shortly after and a lovely …

Good sleep, comfy bed, woke at 8am and had breakfast before heading out to catch the local bus to Hawaii Kai Shopping Centre, about a half hour ride away.

Wow! the submergible scooter was an amazing experience. You are down there about 20 minutes and can snorkel while you wait your turn. There was a fantastic array of tropical fish and …

Started the day with our complimentary foot massage for 15 minutes each. I did suggest Neil could do that for me each morning before he left for work, but any of you that know him well will have guessed his response to that suggestion!
Our final breakfast was again yummy. The continental breakfast which was included has cereal, 3 pieces of …

    Good hotel

Was impressed by the receptionist who found us a room at 6am in the morning after an early morning flight from Las Vegas. This was despite the night guy telling us that there wasn't anything and that they could possibly get us an early check in by 8am if we paid the fee!!!! Thank heavens for sympathetic receptionists.

I like it that all the facilities are 'open' even if the sparrows trying to eat from your plate at breakfast are a nuisance. They obviously can't read the signs that say don't feed the birds.

Great location, good size rooms and bathroom. Decor is very tired but didn't bother us as we spend very little time in the hotels when we travel. It was clean and included breakfast which was toast, juice, fruit, cakes and pastries. It has just changed hands so maybe it will be revamped soon. Overall good value for money and again fantastic location.

    Waikiki Joy

Rooms were large and the beds were comfortable. The hotel porter was brilliant and organised anything that we needed. Most of the food came with a very large serving of fries.

Breakfast was good but had to protect from the birds which scavenged endlessly. Fantastic Koi in the foyer.

Very close to the beach and major hotels.

Telephone was expensive and was charged $0.75 for each phone call made, even if using a phone card.

    Decent place, good price.

    from anonymous

My husband and I stayed at the Aston Waikiki Joy a couple years ago for our anniversary. We were living in Kaneohe at the time and just wanted to spend a night in Waikiki without paying an arm and a leg. I called around to numerous hotels looking for a room with a jacuzzi style bathtub. The Aston Waikiki Joy was the only one I could find for a decent price. The other places wanted $150 or more a night. I agree that the building is a little run down. But the room was clean, smelled fine and the bed was comfy. Granted, the jacuzzi bathtub wasn't really big enough for two. But it was a decent size for one person at a time.

    I would stay there again.

    Nice little hotel, great location!

    from anonymous

I was a bit worried about arriving at this hotel after reading some of the other posted reviews, but I wanted to keep an open mind. I'm glad I did. The hotel was small (only 4 rooms on the floor I stayed on), but it was cute and nice. It was basically a clean and above average place to sleep while in Waikiki Beach. A couple warnings though: If you are a light sleeper, ask to be put in a room away from the elevator. I had to change rooms due to the elevator noise keeping me awake at night. My roommate described it as sounding like a distant train coming and going about every 10 minutes. Also, there is no communal hot tub for guests to use (I was under the impression that there would be a hot tub outside by the pool), but there is a whirlpool tub in each guest room.

The staff was polite and helpful, and there was someone at the front desk whenever we walked past it, day or night. But, the BEST thing about this hotel is it's location. It is really just a little over 2 blocks from the beach (a nice walk) and the hotel is also right in the middle of the nightlife and a fun part of town-(lots of restaurants, bars and nightclubs in walking distance)---without it being loud at night in the hotel rooms. We walked everywhere we went, and didn't need a rental car. A bus stop is very close to the hotel, and the bus runs constantly all over town and costs $2. Also, most tours and daily excursions will pick you up from your hotel room and drop you back off with the transportation included in the tour price. Overall, this hotel is a good deal if you get it on the internet for under $100 a night for a standard room...Just remember to ask for a room away from the elevator if you are a light sleeper!

    Average stay

Stayed at the Waikiki Joy for a week, travelling alone, found it convenient to shopping but preferred the Ohana chain. Waikiki Joy had a jacuzzi in the room, which was the main drawing point for me. The pool is tiny and I found my room quite noisy. The lift to the room was very slow and in fact broke down at one stage, the free breakfast was not particularly appetising and the breakfast area was constantly full of screaming children. The clientele appeared to be mainly Japanese. Also stayed at the Ohana East, which was easily better.

    Great Hotel - Wonderful Staff!

    from anonymous

My wife and I just completed a 6 night stay at the Aston Waikiki Joy.

It was a wonderful place to stay! As advertised, the rooms truly are soundproof. Our room was next door to the elevator and we never heard it! The breakfast buffet is a great way to start the morning! Although, not an elaborate buffet, it was great and the location for the buffet in the semi-outdoor setting was a wonderful place to enjoy breakfast.

The staff was very attentive and very anxious to please you! Staying 6 nights I got to see the entire staff working the front desk. They were all very friendly and always greated you with an nice smile. Valet parking at the hotel works great and it is only $10.00 per day. It just took a few minutes for your car to suddenly appear after requesting it be brought up. The valet parking staff was also very friendly and helpful. If I return to Honolulu I would certainly stay again at the Waikiki Joy. It truly was a joy and a wonderful place to stay!

    Enjoyed the Joy Hotel

    from anonymous

I was skeptical about this hotel after reading some of the reviews. We had not planned on staying at a hotel on Oahu but with family members.

Since it was my husband's first time to the island I thought it would be nice to stay in town. We had a suite with full kitchen for $245/night. The rooms were nice but the jacuzzi tub didn't work. We were on the fourth floor of the hibiscus tower and it was very well maintained. The staff was excellent and were very accomodating. My husband was impressed with the service and enjoyed the hotel. The only thing that I would highly suggest is that they sign up with some kind of movie service. Our 13 yr old was bored stiff at night and a movie would have been helfpul. Overall a positive experience.

Good value for a short visit to Honolulu

    from anonymous

My husband and I enjoyed our two-day stay at the Waikiki Joy Hotel. The price was extremely reasonable for the accommodations, especially for two people like us who weren't planning on spending a lot of time in our room during our stay.

We stayed in the cheapest room offered, and the room and bathroom were large and spacious. There are balconies in every room, but we never went out on ours because the view was of other buildings. There really isn't a room in the hotel that has a view of the beach or ocean, so don't spend extra money on getting a better view - it doesn't exist.

The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, and the valet parking was very quick and efficient ($10/day). The continental breakfast was good, and I strongly recommend spending some time on the complimentary massage chair down in the restaurant area - you won't want to get up.

The pool left much to be desired, but you're so close to Waikiki beach that sun-seekers can take a short walk down the road to a much better atmosphere. The walk down to Waikiki only took us around five minutes, and there is a lot of great shopping in the area.

This hotel was the perfect place for a few days stop in Honolulu between islands. I would not recommend it if you're looking for a long stay at a posh or romantic resort.

    Joy is great little hotel!

    from anonymous

We stayed at the Waikiki Joy our first and last nights in Hawaii and loved it! I liked the fact that it is a smaller hotel w/out all the crazy lines in the lobby etc. Our rooms were very large and clean. The rooms had a king bed, mini fridge, coffee pot and a good sized lanai. The jacuzzi tub was a great bonus! We felt that the $10 valet parking was a deal b/c other places we stayed charged just as much but you had to walk up flights of stairs to get your car. The complimentary drink we selected - "guavalotta" - was fabulous! This hotel is not right on the beach but the walk was short and pleasant. Very quiet and great staff. Our valet remembered us 2 weeks after our initial visit!

It was a "Joy" to stay here

    from anonymous

Mahalo to all staff at the Waikiki Joy. For the first time in my life, I traveled alone, from Illinois to Hawaii. That was Aug.11-17 2003.

What a great time. Went to wittness a wedding on the beach at sunset.

Aside from mine and my daughter's, the wedding was perfect. A rainbow right on que. Bride hired a ukulele player who sang Hawaiian love songs and created to mood. My stay at the Waikiki Joy was also near perfect.

Either the room was sound proof to street noise or I wasjust plain worn out every night. the small fridge and the safe in the room worked out great for me. the a/c worked well, not too noisey and the room was well tended to every day. the hotel was close to the beach and shopping.

Which could explain my being worn out at night. My heartfelt thanks to the Waikiki Joy staff and the Hawaiian people for making my stay so good that in 10 years we are coming back to celebrate the renewal of vows. ( It will take that long to convince my husband to fly that far.) My stay was a "Joy". Aloha. Hang loose. And don't forget to visit the ABC's.

Save Your Money and shop elsewhere

The property is showing signs of wear. The lobby carpets are almost threadbare on the stair risers. The rooms had water damage showing in the bathrooms and under the sinks. One of the rooms I had, the carperting had been ripped off of the balcany, and the bare cement was left. The staff was unattentive about leaving coffee in the rooms and I had to make repeated requests to the Front Desk in order to get what I was susposedly entitled to. To add insult to injury, I was moved to this property and paid a higher price than the room was susposed to be because they had overbooked at the property I was origianlly booked at.

Be very careful with this entire chain. After looking around Waikiki, there are better options at either the same prices or lower.

What a great place to stay in Waikiki!!

    from anonymous

Well, we started our vacation stay at the Aston Coral Reef hotel, next to the International Marketplace, but it was so bad that we complained to the manager (June). She promtly tried to get us in at the Aston Waikiki Joy, and we were lucky enough to be switched over. Kilea, the manager, treated us with respect and understanding and showed us a clean room in this very nice hotel for only an additional $10 a day.

The Aston Joy was really a joy compared to the Coral Reef, and I'd gladly go back and stay for a month. The staff was knowledgeable, helpful and courteous. We're not used to being pampered with valet parking, but it's part of the service at the Aston Joy ($10/day). Our room was clean, and there was a Jacuzzi brand spa tub in the very large bathroom. The pool was heated and clean, as was the sauna. There was also a Sharper Image massage chair available for use in the pool area.

Continental breakfast was a combination of Bagels, breads, pastry rolls, jelly's, fresh fruits (orange slices, bananas and pineapple), coffee, tea, fresh orange or pineapple juice or just plain water. There is a wonderful little Koi pond near the laundry facilities, to relax you as you wait for your clothes. Our 3rd floor view was not spectacular, but the hotel was quiet and trouble free. The air conditioning worked quite well, and there was a stereo wired into the TV for great sound or great radio. To top everything else off, there's a Cuppucinno's in the lobby of the hotel, making meals possible with very little walking. Everyone in my family was so relieved that we switched hotels, even our adult kids and grandchild switched from the Coral Reef to the Waikiki Joy. Thanks to the staff of the hotel for saving our vacation and giving us a clean and fresh place to spend our evenings in Waikiki.Sincerely,Joe & JoAnne Keene
