It's all Greek to Me

... few days playing cards with our fellow guests - Paul, Sally, Sam and Eleanor - hi guys and hope he rest of your trip was less strenous than that climb to Ephesus!

The weather was truly toasty which made the fact that the sea was icy a rather unexpected surprise. We'd taken a boat trip to explore some of the small islands lying off the coast and at the first swim stop we were itching to cool off in the beautifully clear blue waters - and ...

Assos: Another Fine Day

'Twas another day when the Turkish Travel Pixies hovered over my journey. It was a great day. Once again I caught the 7am mini-bus out of the village of Tevfikiye, but only the 5 km out to the main highway running south out of Canakkale. And once again, it wasn't but a few minutes that another larger mini-bus appeared heading on south and stopped at my signal. As before, I stepped out of it at Ezine. The entrance to the otogar was just about 40 meters from where I ...

agean sea, the place to be

... destination (when you enter the town you see tonnes of signs pointing to various places you can stay) and though it's found in my lonely planet, it's more geared towards turks. in any case it's definately off of the backpacker's radar. it's a bit tough to get to assos. i had to take the commuter bus from selcuk to izmir, the regional capital (turkey's third-largest city, previously known as smyrna), then a bus from izmir to ayvacýk (actually to ...

Pergamon and Assos

... really very nice. Another town, Barhamkale sits above Assos and the road into Assos is extremely steep and basically one lane. We were pretty sure that we had wrongly turned down someone's private driveway. Assos is perhaps the prettiest seaside village in Turkey (but of course I haven't seen them all). The pictures will tell only part of the story. We wandered about the old stone buildings, mostly hotels or ...

... the place. Was a nice place to spend the night though. The next morning, like always was another early start, Steve was still struggling with his virus and today was suppose to be the hottest out of all the days in the heat wave, getting to 51 degrees in some places!! First on the agenda for this morning was the drive to Bergama and to visit the Acropolis. it was coming to the middle of the day when we were checking out the site, so everyone was ...

Tea Sugar Dream - the first few days

... course Hotel Krasnapolsky in Dam Square! It was a beautiful day in Amsterdam and we had a lovely walk all the way from the Central Station to Museumseplein (the museum area - quite a good walk), around the park, and back again with a few stops on our walk to eat and enjoy the cafes. The owner of my favorite cafe by Central Station (some of you have been there with me - Pablo Picasso) remembered me and said "oh, welcome back ...

... all wanted to just stay and listen to him, but our guide wouldn´t have any of that! None the less it was an interesting day spent with an interesting tour guide. His name was Ali and he was from Izmir. Once we finished at Troy we got back on our bus and headed back to our hotel ýn Canakkale. This is the point where our painfully long journey to Selcuk began! We were on the bus for 6 hours to Izmir before changing to another bus for 1 more hour. I have to ...
