A very lovely hotel with a very spacious room and stunning views of the mountains surrounding Takayama. However the restaurants here very expensive.

Today we said goodbye to Hakone and headed off to Takayama.

We caught a bus to Odawara train station and then boarded a Shinkansen (bullet train) to Nagoya. Top speed of the train was 275kph. Im really impressed with how smooth the ride was. As the weather was fine we got another chance to see Mt Fuji as the train zoomed by.

The people here cannot raise rice but they became excellent wood carvers using the lumber from the surrounding forests. Most of the surrounding trees are cedar. The …

Arriving at 4.45 it was already getting dark so I sorted out the hostel and got some food from a very nice place that served me noodles and seafood on a hot plate on the table. I'm proud to say my chopstick skills are improving ...

... weather. In this vein I headed up to the local park to where the old castle had been before it was destroyed and walked through the woods. I will be spending another day in takayama tomorrow because I liked it so much, before heading east to Kyoto in the evening. I'm looking forward to having a base in Kyoto for a few days having travelled around so much this last week! But thankfully after tomorrow it is short bullet train journeys almost all the way to my final destination of ...
