A very lovely hotel with a very spacious room and stunning views of the mountains surrounding Takayama. However the restaurants here very expensive.

Today we said goodbye to Hakone and headed off to Takayama.

We caught a bus to Odawara train station and then boarded a Shinkansen (bullet train) to Nagoya. Top speed of the train was 275kph. Im really impressed with how smooth the ride was. As the weather was fine we got another chance to see Mt Fuji as the train zoomed by.

Today we took a trip to the UNESCO heritage areas of Gokayama and shirakawa-go. On the way we saw towering mountains capped with snow, raging rivers and stunning autumn colours. We passed through 12 …

We had 2 changes of train and although not many signs in English, we managed to find our way to Takayama. Two of the trains were more like our light rail and meandered through some of the prettiest countryside we've seen. Mountains awash …

As soon as we checked out of our hotel in Nagoya, we were headed to transfer to the vicinity of Gifu, which was approximately a 1 hour journey. We visited the Gifu Castle, to catch a glimpse of the Japanese traditional daily life, which then we headed to enjoy pear picking. The pears were extremely delicious and juicy, coming from a person who won' …
