On to Granada

Last night we arranged for a taxi to pick us up in the morning to take us to the Moyogalpa ferry dock. We arrived in between ferry sailings and took one of the small boats instead. A few people I'd met on Ometepe said the smaller boats can really get you seasick but I didn't have that problem. After another taxi transfer on the San Jorge side to the Rivas bus station, we were hustled onto a Blue Bird bus just leaving for Granada. Another 90 minute bus ride and we were there. We hadn't made re...

Colonial cities and hammock sprees!

... buildings, very squat and square. The highest point overlooking Granada was at a church down the road from our hostel called La Merced just 2 blocks down from the main square. The bell tower provided a lovely view over the city at sunset and the dollar we paid to climb the stairs was well worth it. Apparently the money goes towards the refurbishment of the church.

We woke up to yet more plotting and planning from the boys. Seriously if it wasnīt for them I donīt think we would be seeing or doing half of the stuff weīve been up to. Theyīre so organised with a very clear plan of what they ...

Ever heard of the Running of the Bulls, Granada?

... at the opposite end of the block there was parked a cattle truck from which a further bull was being unwillingly removed, with the result that I was stuck in the middle of a street (with very high walls crowded with spectators, I might add) with a confused and none-to-happy beast at either end! That certainly required vigilance and a head on a swivel to get out of, and my eventual speedy escape to temporary safety was gleefully recorded by a Granadino with a camcorder ...

Red-eyed frogs and salamanders

Where's a good place to go for local information? The tourist information centre. Not in Granada it ain't. We read about a ranger station you could stay the night in on volcano mombachu, near Granada. For $30 they'd give you a bed, food and a guided night tour. It was about 20 mins drive away. Did they know anything about it? No. We disturbed their coffee break and Paul, with his ever so charming 'i'm not going ...

Hellīs bells and buckets of blood

... to strike twice! Nicaragua seems to have the most volcanoes of anywhere in Central America, and quite a lot are active, and more than its share of earthquakes too. And having been picked on by America for so long, itīs a very poor country. I hope things improve, the people are a delight. One thing all the gringos Iīve met and the Nicaraguans agree on - Costa Rica is the pits.

Kayaking in Las Isletas

... La campion!" so it was decided. Don't know what gave him that idea as I hadn't told them I'd ever done any kayaking...and I've only launched into surf once. But off I went with instructions to keep my paddle out of the water as they pushed me into the surf. Okey dokey. Waiting for a lull in the bigger waves, I was pushed into the lake. Of course the lull only lasted a moment and within 5 ...
