A lost world slowly coming to the fore

... in the Nyang-chu valley it had a friendly feel to it and looked pleasing. We headed off almost immediately to see the Pelkor Chode Monastery (1418). There used to be 15 monasteries of the Gelugpa, Sakyapa & Buton Buddhist orders here, but with the decline of Gyantse's powerful importance over the centuries, the present monastery also appears to house a smaller number of monks After walking thro' a line of prayer wheels, the large courtyard appeared quite barren ...

... gifts are hidden meanings to the teachings of the faith. The "true love" mentioned in the song doesn't refer to an earthly suitor, it refers to God Himself. The "me" who receives the presents refers to every baptized person. The partridge in a pear tree is Jesus Christ, the Son of God. In the song, Christ is symbolically presented as a mother partridge which feigns injury to decoy predators from her helpless ...

I accompanied a class on a field trip to the Urumqi Museum of China, and led a class on an overnight field trip to the Tian'Shan mountains. For my last weekend in Dushan'zi, the college English teacher, Michael (from Melbourne, Australia) and I took a train trip to Almaty, Kazakhstan. I spent my final week in China in Beijing, then flew from Beijing - Chicago - Toronto.

... of sand on the road, and it was fun to watch the constantly changing patterns in front of the bus as the wind blew it. Finally at 4.30 in the afternoon we reached Dunghuang. Although Dunhuang is a desert town, it's completely unlike Hotaugau, as its an Oasis town with a long history and a natural water supply and the appropriate greenery that goes with it. It was with relief and a small amount of regret that my road trip across the desert of Western China was over.

... of bicycles - a rickshaw-bicycle hybrid. You can still get a rickshaw ride in the larger tourist cities. In all cities, rides and delivery for hire are available by bus, taxi, pedicab (3 wheeler), motorcycle, and bicycle. I'm certain you could find someone to carry you on their back in an emergency. Trains are always full, used mostly for long range travel instead of planes. A trip to Beijing takes one hour ...

Zhongwei

Hello! The afternoon we arrived at Zhongwei w went on a raft ride down the Yellow river for about 1.5 hours, it was lovely and relaxing but a bit too long really as I was getting stiff from sitting in the same position for so long. It was strange to see some houses on the side of the river that looked like there were empty and derelict but in fact they weren't. We saw quite a lot of little cave holes in ...

... funny than anything, but I've learned my lesson. I'm requesting females from now on. KFC does chicken right in the minds of the Chinese. There is at least one KFC in every town of any size, and in this town of 2 million there are at least 4 that I've seen. There are no McDonald's, Pizza Huts, or any of the other foreign chains you see in the main cities, but KFC is, uh, all up in it in Lanzhou. I think I've figured it out. Chinese people ...

We insist on paying the Y20 for tickets, but she doesn't want to go in, just tees us up with the Senior English-speaking guide and her offsider. The site is quite interesting, with some delicately made timber grillwork structure, ancient trees, and a large mosque with a forest of timber columns and a large grill-work roof ventilator. The Uighur Princes were the local feudal lords under the Qing ...
