Bangkok 17-20-08

This was the first time I met my son outside Singapore. I chose Asia Hotel because its next to the mass transit train station. I am now even more familiar with the Bangkok mrt better the our own Singapore mrt lol. And of course the price was reasonable. Nearly lost him at the station for a moment though. He just wandered of into the crowd playing with his toy. Good thing I was looking out for him.

The Final Leg

Well Im finally back on home soil and I have offically come crashing back down to earth! I just thought I'd log in for one last time and let you know what I've doing the past few weeks. Well I left Singapore for an even hotter and sweatier Bangkok. Its a crazy crazy place. I arrived arround midnight and spent the first day and night within the confines of the very lovely and rather posh Asia Bangkok Hotel, making good use of the mini-bar and the pool on the 12th floor. However, being in a hot...

A Day in Bangkok

Our flight landed as smooth as silk (as Thai Airways promised). I paused at the door and subconsciously ducked through, like in the movies where famous or powerful people almost bow out of the plane door, before pausing at the top of the stairs leading to the tarmac. I wanted to remember this moment - stepping into a new culture. It was a steamy and humid night. As soon as I stepped from the plane and onto the stairs I was hit by a bank of humidity. It was saying that once I crossed it, I wou...

Bye bye to Thailand!!!

Well tomorrow we leave Bangkok, and Thailand, as we fly to the great freeze of China, which will be very nice actually! I think we'll both definitley miss Thailand, theres so much that we've both loved about the place! Coming to stay in the Asia hotel was a massive plus for us, that we hadn't really expected, but it did add a type of luxury which we certainly hadn't had in India! Staying in the midst of Siam square was really fun. with the shopping centres lining the streets, and fast food ou...

Here we go... Sydney to Bangkok

Well they say things happen in 3s, and that's just what happened on our way over. Everything started out fine - my bags were packed, I actually turned up at the airport at the time I had planned to, and I was feeling good. Then, check in... I almost died when I put my bag on the scale and it came in at over 33kg - the most they'd let me take was 25kg. I didn't fare any better with my hand luggage which weighed 17kg and the most that's supposed to be is 6kg! But no matter how much I argued "bu...

The Wedding Day

I arrived at the wedding hall 15 minutes before the schedule. I do not know anyone there so I have to introduce myself. "Sawatdee" says a lady who happened to be the bride's aunt. What a very warm welcome they have for me, everybody seems to be expecting me. Now I feel special, aside from the groom and the bride, I felt like I was the next most important person there. While seating around the table with new acquaintances, I felt so inferior having seated beside an Australian businessman who k...

My Thai Recollection

I got a call from my mom that my cousin, Santi, is getting married to Chin in Bangkok. I booked for a Philippine Airline flight ot Bangkok and later met up with Santi. Santi and Chin flew in from Los Angeles. We went to Phat Pong 1 on the night of my arrival. Day 2 is the wedding day. It was my first time to experience a Buddhist wedding. We had a blast at the reception. I learned how to dance the Thai way. Then we headed south-southwest, visiting different temples. Temple after temple. Tirin...

Bangkok - The City of Angels

May 24, 2003, cruising at an assigned altitude of 27,000 feet above sea level, we are encountering so much turbulence, so cloudy that everything is cloud white with some cumulunimbus ones. The flagship carrier will be cruising over Bataan province, South China Sea, part of Vietnam and over Cambodia air space. Know where am going? You got it right, dude! I am bound for Bangkok, Thailand, to see my cousin, Santi. Cloud Nine! That's cumuli after cumuli of clouds triggering the pilot to keep the ...

Quest for Chili

Santi and I, took a train to Mo Hin to go to their weekend flea market at Chatuchak in search for chili. We've searched every stall until I almost give up, but I did not because it's for my best friend. Finally, we found it, not inside but outside the flea market. We have to go home after that because all my sweat have dried up on my shirt creating that white discoloration on it. Back in the hotel, I had sauna for 100 baht then off to the wedding.

Hustle and bustle...

Well...what can we say about Bangkok?! It is an amzing city that quite clearly never stops..... We arrived here about 430pm on Monday. By the time we had gotten through passport control, collected our bags, fought our way through the hoardes of taxi touts waiting to pounce we managed to get a 'proper'taxi to take us to our hotel. The amount of traffic was unbelieveable. We got to our hotel about 730pm, it took about an hour to travel 7km. Driving here looks like a real artform. You can undert...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Asia Bangkok

Worth the deal

from JustineLow
I think we got a really good deal for this hotel. It only costed us 170 euros for 2-ways air tickets (Singapore-Bangkok), 5 days 4 nights stay with airport transfer, half-day city tour and 4 days of breakfasts. Although the hotel is really old but everything is clean and good especially their service and also very friendly staffs.

Another important fact about this hotel is the connection with the Skytrain station. It's so convenience and you can go anywhere with the Skytrain. Taking taxi in Bangkok is cheap but there's always the chance of getting in a traffic jam while taking skytrain will avoid such problem.

Great location

from A TripAdvisor Member
Ideally situated for sightseeing, skytrain on doorstep. Rooms large and comfortable but bathroom tired and mouldy despite request for cleaning. Staff very friendly and helpful [make friend for life by taking small lapel badge for cheerful lift lady]. Reasonably priced and tasty food available in hotel but be adventurous as there are plenty of cheap local restaurants on doorstep. Altogether a reasonably priced and comfortable hotel in great location let down only by dirty bathroom. On a more personal note we were accosted on departure for return of two towels we had not been issued with! Be sure to contact housekeeping if full complement of towels does not arrive!

We will be back

We have stayed three times at Asia hotel, and we like it.

A little old, but OK.

Nice peronal - especially the lady that salutes you at the lifts.

She remember us from year to year.

Very good location.

Not bad, but nothing special

from A TripAdvisor Member
Most of the reviews here are right on the money. The staff are freindly enough. The rooms, and infact the entire hotel, have not been renovated for 20-30 years. My room on the "non-smoking" 12th floor reeked of stale cigarettes. There is no in-room internet access. The mini-bar was cheap.

I was given a 'complimentary' breakfast on the 17th floor and it was awful. But to be honest in this city you don't need a hotel breakfast, just go out and get something.

The location is fantastic for shopping and Phantip Plaza (IT bargains), and having the skytrain out the front is very handy. Cabs from the hotel are expensive, get your own from the street.

I booked online via a web site that claimed this was a 4 star hotel. The silly thing is that if they just updated the rooms and lobby they could turn it into one. I think this hotel is good value if you get a discount rate. I paid 1880 baht for one night, and it didn't feel like particularly good value in this city.

Great location and price

from A TripAdvisor Member
Very nice hotel with friendly staff. At first aloof but correctly mannered they open up really fast when you attempt to speak Thai. Location was very good, subway ran thru the hotel itself which made getting to and fro all of Thailand quite nice. Buffet was surprisingly good, make sure to opt for the breakfast buffet combo with room. Would definitely stay again. Lots of Chinese and Japanese tour groups.

All about location

from DutchyCan
This hotel has two things going for it: the price and the location. And that to me was important for a hotel in Bangkok.

The hotel is quite big and impersonal. The rooms are dark and not too modern. The bathroom is neither very up to date. But we were not interested in a 5 star hotel with all amenities. We came here just to sleep. And every cabdriver seems to know Asia hotel, which is a plus so your cabdriver does not get lost.

Of course everything is more expensive in the hotel then 10 meters outside of the hotel. So we arranged our own breakfast and cabrides ourselves.

A plus was the fact we got a free dayticket for the skytrain for every 3 nights. But the skytrain tickets are not that expensive anyway.

The location is mainly good because of the skytrain. In Bangkok though I found out that there are more hotels with an o.k. location near the skytrain, so next time that would not be one of my main searching arguments. I can recommend this hotel, if your main wish is to have an o.k. and clean place to sleep and do not mind about the older furniture.

We went to Bangkok for sightseeing and shopping. And both can be done perfectly from the Asia hotel. Bangkok is a great city to travel in by skytrain. The food is delicious and very affordable. The people are friendly and the salespeople are tough with all their imitation-products.

I had a lot of benefit from the website from Bangkok Bob, and felt very prepared when visiting the city (even though I was there already one time before).

In a resume: Go to the Asia hotel when you get a good price. It is very well located and you will not get lost since everybody seems to know the Asia hotel. When your main interest is to stay near the shopping area it is a good hotel. It is very big and therefore lacking of personal touch. But basically I think you can not go wrong paying 25 dollar per night for a hotel like this.

Charged twice for one stay

from eddiesmtih
This hotel is well situated being close to the Skytrain and Siam Square. The rooms are ok if a little dark and tatty. The main problem I had was being charged twice. I had booked the room over the internet (on Hotels) and payed on credit card. Upon checking out the hotel said there had been a problem with the card and I'd need to pay. When I got back I found that there was no problem with the card and the money had been taken out. I am having major problems trying to get either the hotel or the website to do anything about it.

Very friendly helpful staff and fantastic buffet

from A TripAdvisor Member
From the moment I first checked in to the Asia Bangkok the staff there were so friendly and helpful. Especially the lady that salutes you at the lifts.

I was staying in the hotel alone and the room for one person was huge. The hotel has been running for 30 years so parts of the hotel aren't fantastic but by all means very comfortable.

The buffet dinner and breakfast where fantastic for the price and try not to miss the Thai Elvis impersonator.

I love the pool with the view of the city on the 12th floor.

Very happy with my stay.

Great

from A TripAdvisor Member
This was a great hotel - pleasant rooms with a fairly big bathroom.Staff were really helpful. Grounds were absolutely beautiful and the private beach was a bonus. Pool area great also. Breakfasts were lovely though the restaurants on-site were not particularly good quality or good value. The cabbage and condom restaurant a couple of minutes away at the top of the beach was well worth a visit though.

Bad Customer Service

from NY11373
I had stayed at the Asia twice, the third time was the last. On the plus side, the hotel is very convenient, with the sky train right outside. The rate was very cheap when booked over a hotel online site. On my last visit, when checking out, I had $24.00 in local calls. Since they said a local call was only 10 baht (25 cents) for as long as you talk, this was listed in the hotel room. They told me that was not for cell phones which cost 25 baht per minute. The last straw came when taking my valuables from the safe and the girl wanted a "tip".
