Almost 700 miles driven today! From 5:30am to 8:30pm and we did it! Overall it was great and not as hard as we thought it might be. The first part was pretty smooth except an accident in the beltway in Houston. We stopped for lunch at 11:30am in lake Charles, Louisiana at a nice shady park which had clean bathrooms and picnic tables. We had a nice picnic lunch and the kids played then back on ...

The parade ground of Pickens is half-filled with a huge concrete gun battery that was added in 1898 after it became clear that the new technology on ships had made the old brick batteries obsolete. ... were capable of aiming at warships. There was an interesting display of cubic foot blocks of Yellow Pine, White Pine, and Live Oak fastened on ropes to hoists, so visitors can manually lift them. The first weighs 44 pounds, the second 56, and the third 75. Allowing people to actually lift the blocks was a great way to demonstrate how much denser the Live Oak is.
