Blenheim

... the room. The walls are paper thin and as our room is near the kitchen we tend to hear abit of noise, esp on the weekend. Not too bad in the week as every one goes to bed early with getting up at 0530am. This is the first hostel we have felt old in, there are alot of younger back packers here and they dont seem to have the same morals and common sense and seem unable to look after themselves! They are mostly in the 18-21 age ranges but ...

Touring the North of the South

... in the Nelson Lakes National Park. The 85km across was largely on a straight road stretching off as far as we could see set amongst the vines of Marlborough, finally giving way in the last few km to winding forest track up to the lack. For the whole journey through the Wairu valley, two very different mountain ranges towered either side of us, dry and almost barren on the left, plush and green on the right. Lake Rotoiti itself was straight off a postcard ...

Across the Cook Strait

... other! Its that close. And you dont actually sail south but west. Still pretty fun though. It took about an hour I'd say to actually get out of Wellington Harbour. The city is kinda tucked back in it a ways. Then, it was a quick run across Cook Strait and into the little channels that break up the north end of the south island. The last part of the trip actually ...

... to Christchurch tomorrow for the last couple of days - Christmas Eve and the start of our holiday seems like months ago. This will probably be the last entry while we're out here so I hope you've all enjoyed keeping up with our adventure - we'll fill you in on the last couple of days when we get home and then we'll be able to add pictures too. Lots of love, H&Sxx

Whale watching! 25/09/08

We headed straight to the tourist information to find out what options were on offer for us today. After consulting and boat and a plane trip to look at whales, we settled for the plane trip. We headed to the airport and after a brief intro and safety talk, Mike and I boarded the four seater plane, with our pilot/guide. Mike sat in the front with the pilot and I sat in the back. We wore ear muffs, which not only protect our ears against the noise of the plane but also enable us to hear ...

By Pato

To the South Island

I've attached photos of my trip on the Interislander ferry from Wellington on the North Island to Picton on the South Island. Most of the pics are of Queen Charlotte Sound and as I think you'll agree there are some pretty good views. Luckily the sea wasn't too choppy. There are also a few pics of Picton where I had about an hour to kill before I got my bus down to Kaikoura to go whale watching.

Boozing in Blenheim

... in Abel Tasman. A few recommendations for wineries to visit for lunch, a map, and emergency phone number in case we were to drunk to cycle (did she know us too well ?) and we were on our way. First stop on the wine trail was Seresin, named after Micheal Seresin a filmmaker, you may know it from the handprint symbol, which is his own (I always though it was a kids). This is a wine Helen had got quite into whilst in Bermuda. One lunchtime (when her ...
