Azerbaijan At Last!

... br><br>We were stopped at the port entrance by a surly guard and led into another office, this one turned out to be the Ferry Company office, where we were charged another wad of dollars, this time for our transport. It turned out that the $90 we each paid at the other side of the sea was for the passenger and they now wanted another $90 for each bike and $300 for the Landy! Oh, and to add insult, $12 ...

sense of foreboding

Well, it's taken all day, but we've made it onto the boat. This is one dodgy affair. Happily the few other passengers on this filthy freighter are mostly British, travelling around the world on motorbikes. Everything is filthy, and there is nothing but Molly's ...

getting lost on the metro

Chris didn't feel great, so Damien and I went into town to investigate the ferry, and while we were relieved to discover there was one the next day, we were surprised to find they were after over $600 for the privilege. We got a bit separated ...

showers!

Spent the day in Baku and met up with the Gordons in the early evening. We had showers! I was disappointed to find that most of my tan was ingrained dirt. Graeme took us out for a curry and few beers and we returned to sleep in beds! Chris and I shared a double bed, but he only hugged me once in his sleep. It was a special moment.

... Timur (Tamerlane) and assorted earthquakes. The Russians started annexing Muslim khanates in the early 18th century. In the early 19th century the Russians encouraged immigration of Christians from Russia, Germans from Wurtemburg and Armenians, This indirectly sowed the seeds of ethnic conflicts that broke out in 1905, 1918 and 1989. Petroleum was discovered in the area, and by 1905 Baku (the capital) was supplying half the ...

... and beckoned me to follow him, up some stairs, through a gate, between a fence &amp; a shed. He opens this door to a little kinda early miners shack. Its got two single beds and a stove in the middle of the room. Old man stinks. He throws a whole lot of **** off one bed onto the floor and turns around and smiles. I'm saying no, I'm gonna put my tent over here on the grass. He explains there will be rain tonight. No problem, my tents waterproof and I'm not staying in a ...

E giu' a ...

... existence of the tower but a more popular one was that it used to serve as a Zoroastrian temple. The Zoroastrian religion being an ancient pagan religion practiced in the Caucasus and Persia (Iran) and still practiced in distant, hard to reach mountain areas. The dead where said to be brought up to the top of the tower where the crows could dispose of the body, much like they still did in Tibet. I continued on with my discovery of Baku, spending 1 hour finding the State ...
